16. The are. But the valve to turn on the water is pretty deep. So you can run over the hydrant

and no water comes out. It is in the movies where the water comes out when broken. They would never be able to put the caps on the hydrant or screw the hoses on if under pressure.

I found this picture online. From what I'm seeing on this model, it has a primary valve accessed by a plate in the road, and a secondary valve on top of the hydrant.

Fun stuff! Enough water pressure to peel the skin off of someone.

18. The valve handle is there, a rod connects to that and goes to the valve that is on the water main.

That method prevents freezing and such, since there isn't any water above the freeze line. As a a kid I watch some water guys install a new one and figured out how they did it. At least that was how those were.

23. I was reading on wikipedia that the hydrant has "sacrificial bolts" that hold it to the pipe.

That way something can hit it and knock it off and not destroy pipe or hydrant.



You can see the control rod in the pipe and the hydrant. This hydrant was hit by a snow plow it said.
