Ben Carson Loses Control at Press Conference -- Un-Presidential As It Gets

He starts to lose his cool at about 5:30, describing himself as a scientist, he states: 'as a scientist who does investigations.... that is the most lame investigation I have ever seen...' all the while, still believing the solid-stone pyramids were used to hold immense stockpiles of grain, despite all scientific evidence. OMG - this joke-of-a-candidate switches from being a religious denier of fact, to a scientist relying ONLY on facts from one second to the next. He starts to go off the rails about 8:00

As for "WEST-POINT-GATE".....

"I never said I received a FULL SCHOLARSHIP"
in video (above) at 10:50...

Here's a clip where Carson directly states:
"I was offered a FULL SCHOLARSHIP to West Point"

and the bottom line is -- there is absolutely no evidence West Point ever offered him a scholarship, nor did he even go through the process to apply for one (which his book details)... so how on earth would he be offered a FULL SCHOLARSHIP having not applied for it in the first place.

_______

I guess it depends on what your definition of 'FULL SCHOLARSHIP' is...
(wink)

Everybody there is attending the academy on the taxpayers dime. Conditioned on an extended term of service in the US Army.

I call bullshit just based on him not being able get the words right.

You have to get in--and you need to get a recommendation from a big wig, usually your local representative, or an ambassador if you are a foreign student (yes, the academies take foreign students--and the foreign academies take American students, too).

He's a ... what's the word? Oh, yeah--a LIAR. There's no way around it. He did not tell the truth.

based on a classmate, a relative, and several students that I'd later had as a teacher, all of whom attended one of the military academies. That Carson doesn't seem to be aware of the process is truly scary, "brilliant" surgeon or not. He seems to think fact checks or blatant reversals of previous statements shouldn't affect him. Actually, he's not any scarier than his supporters: they give new meaning to "Ideocracy!"

27. the application process

is long. You start by getting recommendations from as many teachers as you can, an JROTC instructor is a must. You send those, your GPA, SAT/ACT and anything extra curricular to your senators and congressman in your district. If they are impressed enough with your resume you get an interview. They each only get to rec 1 to 2 students per year for each academy so they are very picky who they rec. They each get hundreds of students looking for a rec, they get to select less than 10.

You also have to prove that the Academy is interested in you as a candidate for enrollment.

So now you get your needed recs from a politician. You still have to go through the academy process, Physical, physical fitness test, eye exam. Phone interview and an in person meeting.

I know this because my kid dropped out of the process just before the in person meeting, she accepted a full ride to another college. I was one irate parent.

You also have to start this in your JR year.

So no, Carson did not get an out of the blue offer for a scholarship. They don't fucking give them. You get to do all that and if you make it through to graduate you then give the US military the next 6 years of your life.

process, one you don't forget going through.

here is an excerpt from a NYT article that IMO abolishes his new story, that it was an "informal offer"

“I didn’t refuse the scholarship outright, but I let them know that a military career wasn’t where I saw myself going,” he wrote.

Elsewhere in “Gifted Hands,” Mr. Carson wrote that he had applied only to Yale because he could not afford the application fees for any more colleges. But over the years, he referred to his West Point invitation in a way that could make it seem like an official offer.

In a later book, “You Have a Brain,” he described how he had decided which college to attend: “I still had the scholarship offer from West Point as a result of my R.O.T.C. achievements,” he wrote.
http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/11/06/ben-carson-west-point/

He would have had to of gone through the whole application process and accepted to WP, to be able to choose which college he was going to. If his only acceptance had been from Yale, there would be no need to decide which college. Seriously Yale is prestigious enough, why lie and say WP offered him a scholarship?

7. You Can Become a Doctor in the Military

Nov 2015

I think every branch of the military, except the Marines, which has its medical staff provided by the Navy, has its own doctor corps. So when Dr. Carson says the reason he turned down an West Point scholarship was because he wanted to be a doctor his statement does not make sense.

Sat Nov 7, 2015, 07:47 AM

...do go to med schools directly after completing their academy undergraduate degrees. If the government pays for that medical education, the service obligation is extended.

The military has had its own med school since 1972 - the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). The acronym USUHS was typically pronounced "You-Shoes." It accepts students from both military and civilian backgrounds. Prior to USUHS, there was something called the Berry Plan, which would pay for a civilian med school in return for a term of military service in the medical corps.

Attending West Point would, in no way, have precluded Carson from becoming a doctor. It would have made sure he had no student loans, and no risk of being individually sued for malpractice.

The ability to receive being different from receiving the ability, would make me look silly arguing this point.

What constitutes receiving, a check in hand, a letter on letterhead, a verbal contract, or an off the cuff remark from a person who could effect that offer? Any of those would be receiving to the unbiased guy. He said he received it, he said he received the offer.

The grain story has more traction, if it is not as muddied.
