You know, the ACA is "no skin off MY nose." If I were a selfish person I wouldn't give a shit one way or another. But I know how much it helps people, people who REALLY need the help, and I'd hate to see it go by the wayside for their sakes.

The GOP has been trying to repeal this thing and has tried dozens and dozens of times to make it happen. There's no sixty vote rule in every instance, though, anymore, so they got this one through. If you don't understand that a GOP Congress--BOTH chambers-- can be problematic, I can't be bothered to school you.

They've been trying to overturn ACA since it was passed--they never got to the bill presenting stage.

They're there now.

but the rejected plans you mention would have very little effect on the vast majority of those deaths.

The vast majority of the 200,000 gun deaths are not a result of a lack of background checks for online and gun show purchases, nor from guns purchased by individuals on the terror watch list. They are from illegally obtained guns that are then used in illegal activity.

I am 100% for more gun control, and the plans the Neocons have rejected make sense as well as part of that effort, but your post seems to be trying to influence the reader to draw a conclusion that just isn't true, and other DUers seem to be eating it up.

on edit: I am neither a gun owner nor a gun-rights advocate, but I do want to see us take meaningful action that will have the heaviest influence on gun-related deaths. And these proposals are not that.

obtain a gun today, save the life of the Washington, D.C. teenager who will be shot and killed today with a gun a guy has illegally owned for years?

As already stated, the majority of the 200,000 deaths are 1 or 2 at a time, caused by guns already illegally owned and used on the streets. Adding protective layers to the legal purchasing process is certainly not a bad thing, and would certainly impact mass shootings as those involve legal guns nearly half the time. But mass shootings, as terrible as they are, are a fraction of the gun deaths in this country.

How do we reign in the # of illegal guns ALREADY OUT THERE and ALREADY BEING USED ILLEGALLY? That's how you make a significant impact on the # of gun deaths. It's disingenuous to insinuate that gunshow/online sale laws are going to make more than a tiny dent in the # of deaths; why would we knowingly take the less impactful approach?

As JFK told one of the White House workers when he took office.
Kennedy said he wanted to plant an oak tree in front of the WH.
The gardener said "that will take 20 years to grow!"
To which Kennedy replied "Then we better plant it today"

Illegal guns were purchased legally at some point--then stolen, or sold to people that should not have received them.

Truth is, I don't want this election to be about abortion, or God, or Guns, or Gays. I want it to be about wealth disparity, increasing wages, bringing manufacturing back by getting rid of poorly negotiated trade agreements, and taxing the rich more.

But one, or several social issues always steal focus.

We all need to realize that nothing will change until we get a filibuster-proof majority, the House, and the Executive branch--so all this talking about it, just as I said, steals focus from the real issue, rich v. poor.

If I thought it would do any good, I would wish that each and every one of these soul-less, cinder-hearted Scrooges would be visited by three ghosts. And the sooner the better:
• The Ghost of Xmas Past -- showing them what the United States used to stand for, from only a well-armed militia having rights to bear arms, to a health-care system that wasn't driven by profits, and the vision of FDR and LBJ in providing a safety net for our most vulnerable citizens.
• The Ghost of Xmas Present -- affordable health care coverage for everyone through a less-than-perfect network, overshadowed by more-than-daily domestic terrorist attacks (i.e. Mass murders).
• The Ghost of Xmas Future -- a tRump presidency with his three ex-(or soon-to-be-ex-) wives on the Supreme Court, a budget deficit that makes Bush-43's look like an overdrawn PayPal account, and bullets-over-Broadway: everybody and his dog exercising 'stand-your-ground' rights where nobody's secure (except the NRA), and the body-count seriously cuts into the GOP voter base, the Koch family and any other loyal supporters. Not to mention the rest of us.

members who does not have the ability to enact sensible laws, they have sold out to NRA. They finally stood up to Grover Norquist on his tax oath and guess what, no one fell dead. It could be the same again, just tell NRA some of the laws like no liability to gun manufactures, sellers, etc will be repealed. stop all internet sells of ammo and high capacity magazines, stop the gun show sells without complete background checks, start indicting straw buyers, and more. Sensible, I am a gun owner, my family hunts but they don't need a AR15 or high capacity magazines, they pride themselves in one shot will do. They would be the laughing stock if they needed to shoot 10 times to bag the game.
