Countertops are something else entirely. I always figured I could get the cats to stay off them when I was within eyesight. I knew from paw prints that the little shits were up there as soon as I left the room. I just went with the flow and wiped them down before I started to prepare food on them (the counters, not the cats-who would have objected), a good habit to get into even now when I'm catless.
Cats are animals absolutely determined to be themselves, no matter the preference of other creatures around them. It's usually easier to modify our behavior than theirs.

(16,377 posts)Let the cat up on the counter/table/whatever any time s/he wanted to unless we had company and then we just acted disgusted like it was the first time s/he did such a thing. Worked great.
