You know the spirit behind what the man is expressing yet you have to find something to be offended by. Here's a thought, how 'bout you don't throw meat scraps to the dogs. Political correctness has truly gone to far. Before expressing your knee jerk reaction to a word or phrase, think for a second and if the person isn't using the word or phrase to hurt or demean someone or something you just keep your reaction to yourself. You may not want to accept it, but you're doing more harm than good to your cause.
You may be angry with what I'm saying but that doesn't change the truth of it.
Appendum: What makes all our your outrage even more petty is the fact that one of the definitions for the word in the Oxford Dictionary is:
An object or undertaking that is unpleasant or badly made or carried out.
So the man is actually using the word as it is also defined in the dictionary and in the proper context yet that "offends" you. Knock yourselves out guys but please understand that this sort of "properness" simply reinforces the stereotype of liberal that rural America believes we all are. Thanks for your help.

I suspect what's really going on here is your pique at the failure of RandomThought and I to properly "appreciate" your boy,, liberal redneck. Sorry, but, we're not obligated to do that, or focus only on what YOU believe we "should' focus on.
In addition, to dropping the pretense that "abortion" is being used here to mean anything other than an operation on pregnant women, I'd suggest you lose that Male Privilege and stop telling women what WE should be offended by and how we should act in regard to our own cause.
Have a nice day.

(1,105 posts)And yes I can just about guarantee that Trey's use of the word "abortion" in that context was describing a totally screwed up, messed up, disaster of a program. I think he'd look at you like you were nuts if you accused him of using the word as a medical procedure.
As to my "pique", nah, more sadness. I am a fan of the Liberal Redneck because he's a bridge person. I've enjoyed exposing some of my neighbors to his work. Watching the beginning glimmer of awareness on their faces as they awaken to a different way of looking at some issues is a great joy. He helps break through the FAUX News conditioning. I can say the same things, try to express the same ideas to these people and get nowhere. Sometimes presentation makes all the difference, same ideas expressed in a way people can relate to can get through preconceived notions. Naturally Trey's not going to get through to everyone since there are hard core, self-righteous, close minded individuals on both sides of the divide.
Of course you DON'T have to "appreciate" or "focus" on anything you don't want to. Silly me, I just keep thinking that people who post here recognize our society will never be a civil one under the current conditions. Until the majority of us can accept each others differences with respect, come together, and devise something that works to promote the general welfare of EVERYONE in this nation we will remain mired in strife.
This will require a great healing and is a task that may never be fully achieved but people like the Liberal Redneck are agents of that change and I both "appreciate" and respect his work.
Ya'll have a good one yourself

(29,067 posts)Sorry, Rural, but it seems you're suffering mightily from it.
Hostile?....I think it's clear that you are the "hostile" one here. Your first response to my two line post which wasn't even addressed to you and merely said I didn't "like" something. was met by your four paragraph screed, which, among other things, characterized those 2 lines (whose strongest word was "dislike" . as my "outrage".
You're funny.

(1,105 posts)You remind me of some of my more FAUX News indoctrinated neighbors. When you can't refute the message, attack the messenger.
So sad.

(29,067 posts)and sorry, dear, but I DID refute your message, but by bit....It's called logical discourse..Not sure if you're able to recognize it.

I don't know if I've ever seen it used like that here, but if we see it again, I suggest we register our dislike, if you get my drift.

(3,818 posts)such as he states. I cannot believe you are calling someone out for using that word without even commenting on his satire.
Here's one of the definitions:
any malformed or monstrous person, thing, etc.
It is an apt word to use in a lot of situations. Maybe it is a southern thang...
whathehell
(29,067 posts)Don't know if it's a "southern thing".. It's certainly an ugly, sexist thing.
GaYellowDawg
(4,447 posts)You know, that Trumpian kind of phrase where you say but don't really say a slur. Don't know if it's a "southern thing". Why, you could have gone with the classic "some people say" instead of "don't know if." As in, "Some people say that's a great way to be a passive-aggressive pissant." Or wait - maybe you tried to go full Trump, but it was an abortive attempt?
Check the dictionary. It's a perfectly reasonable use of the word "abortion." You don't get to claim words for your own use.

(4,447 posts)If you're capable of reading who authors threads/replies (hint: actually look at the page), you'll see that my previous reply was my first post in the thread - a reply to your regional slur. Therefore, it was impossible for me to have brought up region before you did.

I love liberal redneck. His skewering of dumbass CONservative world view. His way with words, and analogies... and the Southern accent. So great.
I agree, it's hard for me to hear the word "abortion" used as a Universal negative like this, but that doesn't take away from the rest of it for me. Just too right-on to throw out on principle.

(6 posts)Hey Miles. I just joined the Democratic Underground and posted a video I made in the General Discussion Group (to an arbitrary thread) and just noticed they took it down and said to ignore this member. So I am obviously doing something wrong. All I wanted to do was to share a video I made.
I rewrote the lyrics to the 1965 protest song 'Eve of Destruction" by Barry McGuire. I sang the song with the new lyrics on my iPhone via a Karaoke APP of the original song, and built a video to go along with the song, and posted to YouTube (my first).
I hope you like it. Here it is. And tell me what the hell I'm doing wrong.

(28,340 posts)We have a lot of traffic that comes through here where people just want to spam the board or promote themselves or their products and that's not really what we do here.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't share your song or people don't do that on occasion. We do have a forum under Entertainment called "Music Appreciation."
I just think people will be more receptive if you spend a little time getting to know the community first. Stretch your legs, have a look around.

You got that right. I am new to this type of forum and was a little anxious to share my video, especially since I am not a musician, song writer, or singer (although I have been doing some Karaoke recently). And I never made a video before.
But I am quite concerned with recent politics and the direction of the country.
I think I need an operating manual for how to navigate all the forums, boards, topics, and threads in this community. And maybe I don't even get exactly what you guys do here. At first look it seems like many, many, folks all posting thoughts on hundreds of topics and I am not sure where it's all going or what's the outcome.
Sorry to vent with you but seems like you know the answer.
BTW, why the distress flag? Even in "Eve of Destruction" I fly the flag upright.
Back to you

Thanks. I guess I was moving to fast. This forum will take a while to navigate and I'm a long way from knowing how it works.
The General Discussion forum/group had so many exclusions of topics it reminded me of Steve Wrights line that he went to the General store but they wouldn't let him buy anything specifically!
Thanks again. I responded to the "well done"
