I've always felt that Hawking was a bit over rated.
Nevertheless, in recent years, I've been a fan of his politics. Still, this exaggeration may not have been helpful. It is hard enough to convince the deniers and they tend to lump all climate statements together. This one is pretty hard to justify scientifically. Yes, it could happen. The Earth could get hit by an asteroid too. Actually, the Earth getting hit in the next 100 years is probably somewhat more likely.
Yes, we need to do something about AGW but we also need to work the politics carefully.
