Papantonio: Who Are The Climate Criminals?

You don’t have to be an environmentalist or a scientist to be concerned about what’s happening to our planet when it comes to climate change. The evidence is all around us, and as a whole, we’re doing almost nothing to stop the coming catastrophes. And it’s because of a few wealthy, powerful, corporate elites that the United States has almost completely stalled all action to help combat global climate change, and Mike Papantonio recently spoke with Gaius Publius from America Blog about the corporate CEOs who are helping our planet burn to the ground.

1. At least SOMEBODY is talking about this still. We've got a bigger problem than rMoney's tax returns.

The CEO identifies with his corporation the same way an absolute monarch identifies with his kingdom (L'etat, c'est moi). He is responsible for the well being of his little corporate entity and will protect it from enemies as fiercely as a mother protects her child.

The most natural enemy of a corporation is other corporations. To do the right thing and not destroy the planet is like unilaterally disarming. It may be the right thing to do, but to just do it on one's own initiative makes the state or the corporation vulnerable to a hostile takeover.

So, corporations will keep doing all the sociopathic things they do because if the corporation ceases to be successful in the highest sense of the word it ceases to be altogether. Corporations will collectively remain on a trajectory to destroy the planet as long as doing something about it puts an individual corporation at a competitive disadvantage.

Will to power, a term made famous by Nietzsche, is used by Mike Papanontio in the above segment, but not quite the same way Nietzsche would used it. Nietzsche's philosophy is under a heavy influence from Schopenhauer, who used the word Will much differently than it is usually used. For Schopenhauer, Will what the entity must do in order to survive, not merely acting on a whim when it is free to do something else.

The fault, dear Brutus, is in ourselves, not in our stars, that we are the underlings. Or perhaps it is in our stars, or something beyond our power to control. The survival of the planet is about our survival -- you and I, who don't quite identify with the corporation from each of us works as strongly as the CEO. Our survival is dependent not on making the corporation thrive until it has devoured the ecosystem and thus assures the extinction of all of us and of itself as well, but on limiting the collective power of all corporations to were they must live within the ecosystem.

The most immediate goal is to defeat the Romney-Ryan ticket, but by not means is that the last or even the most important thing to do. Do not believe for a minute that the fight is over when we win this little skirmish.

quality of life like they have ruined ours! I am also glad he includes Obama in this. Obama helped BP with covering up the effects of the oil spill and has the Coast Guard acting as BP's agent of cover up. I know of what I say in this regard. I am a Progressive but, it is not just the Repugs that are complicit in this. The powers that be buy off everyone they need to to get what they want!
