Related: About this forumBank of America Drills Safe Deposit Box and Removes Heirlooms
Both my parents grew up during the Great Depression. All their lives they distrusted banks. They kept their valuables in my great grandfathers safe which was built into a hidden space in the basement. My father opened a small savings account and kept only enough money in the account so that he could cash his paychecks. My parents never had a checking account.
What happened to this couple reminds me of the clean out crews who steal property from homes under the guise of securing properties in foreclosure. It just doesnt seem as though anything is safe from the banksters in this country.
(Im still awaiting a call from the courthouse to go to trial on my Quiet Title, for those familiar with my lawsuit.)

(15,801 posts)also steals from the disabled. They swiped $25K from a special savings account owned by a thirty-something man with disabilities; the account had been started when he was a child, with his father as adult signatore. Years later, mom and dad hit a rough patch and suffer a foreclosure, BofA uses that as pretext for stealing the kid's money. Lovely folks at BofA.

(718 posts)Because they can. Why does anyone bank with these crooks? Open a new account with a credit union and tell the bank bye bye. Duh!

(551 posts)I viewed the video again and froze upon the letter sent to this couple. Bank of America informed them that since their Taxpayer Identification Number was supposedly missing from their account, Bank of America declared the box contents Abandoned Property. The letter states the property is stored at the central vault.
The letter also informed the couple that they would have to pay a drilling fee before the property would be returned to them. Moreover, after the retention period expires, Bank of America would handle the property in accordance with state law.
I searched the phone number provided in this letter and Abandoned Property appears to become Unclaimed Property and is often auctioned by the state.
Heres an example in New Hampshire: http://nh.mypublicnotices.com/PublicNotice.asp?Page=PublicNotice&AdId=2858049
Like me, do you doubt the accuracy of the inventory of the deposit box contents that was sent with this letter? Do you wonder if all the property from the central vault makes it to public auctions?
To date, its actually been several months and this couple still haven't received their heirlooms. Banks hire unlicensed contractors who trash out homes in the name of property preservation. That stolen property is never recovered. Its disappeared - gone. Some homeowners have sued and at least received compensation for their losses. Like those trashed out homeowners, I dont believe this couple will ever recover their precious heirlooms.
This couple filed a lawsuit and the woman, Unsa Kamal posted numerous petitions on Change.org.

From the petition: When we rent a Safe Deposit Box, we assume all our valuables will be kept safe and the bank would be liable for any potential loss or damage resulting from their incompetence or negligence. Well that is not the case. BoA attorney states the bank has limited liability and is in no event liable for loss of personal valuables. So what do consumers pay for when they rent a "Safe Deposit Box", if not safety?
Once the banks have contrived a reason to declare Abandoned Property and drilled deposit boxes, and perhaps pilfered what appealed to them, what happens to Unclaimed Property? Is valuable property often removed from safe deposit boxes?
Check out what happened in California:
California Unclaimed Property - Bank of America Stole Our Money
If something disappeared from your safe deposit box, how would you prove what was missing? How would you recover the valuables?
They steal from our pension funds, our Treasury, our very homes, even the content of our safe deposit boxes.
Why must the fortunate few steal from the hard working many?

(60,010 posts)Seriously, I cannot fathom it.
Surely by now it is abundant that there is NO law the banks will not break, and they know they will get away with it.
yet people still keep giving them money.
