(2,073 posts)I couldn't agree with David Frum more on that one. It is something I have constantly felt in my gut ever since the start of this presidency, and the DOJ and FBI investigations pursuant to it. Appeasement didn't work with Hitler, and I don't think it will work with Donald Trump either. They chipped / are chipping away at democracy piece by piece, and if we throw out pieces of it to them, we are only fitting ourselves into their script, their playbook. The further you kick the can down the road with appeasement, the bigger of a fight you will have later on. Just look at World War II. Our current political and constitutional situation could be likened to a new American Civil War, caused not by differences on great moral issues like slavery, but just by one individual who is trying to put himself above the law. Just think of it - Donald Trump expects us to fight a new American civil war over nothing but himself!
Nevertheless, I see the logic of Lawrence's position, and do recognize that, in many situations in life, adaptability works, and is a virtue. But is this one of them? And is there really that much of a line or demarcation between adaptability and appeasement? Isn't appeasement a form of adaptability? Another good point that Lawrence made was that only Rosenstein knows the full status of the investigation, and the full extent of the evidence against the president as it now exists. And maybe Mueller is on the verge of handing down the big indictment against Donald Trump, and is just putting the finishing touches on the case. Let's hope so. In other words, if the short amount of time, and the number of days that Rosenstein will be able to "fight for another day" is sufficient to bring the case against Donald Trump to its full completion, and he knows that, then more power to him. But if it's just a spineless wimping out, and if it's followed by acquiescing to the demands of Nunez and his gang, that would definitely be a line that shouldn't be crossed.
