Published on Jul 26, 2018

A gentleman gets dressed in the fashion of 18th century. He puts on his clothes, with help in a particular order, including a full shirt with voluminous sleeves, stockings, breeches, waistcoat, cravat, shoes, neck stock, coat, wig and accessories.

Discover our collection of 18th century costumes and accessories in our display 'Dressed to Impress: Fashion in the 18th Century.

but can you imagine the summers, especially with those hot wigs. I lived in Phila and often thought of how the founding fathers must have felt as I would walk past Independence Hall on my way to my summer job everyday. Hot and humid, no deodorant, etc must have made it a pretty stinky place (and think of all those horses in the streets as opposed to cars).

When I visited France I was told that the people didn't take baths for fear of getting the plague (they didn't know the real cause at the time) so they wore wigs to cover their dirty hair and men and women wore tons of perfume to help hide the their odor.
