The UK could officially leave the European Union next month, which would be a huge change with hugely damaging consequences.

(205,260 posts)But John's explanation made the problem much clearer. I agree that this could cause a resumption of the "Troubles," and that would be the worst possible outcome. That is an option to be avoided at all costs.

Hubby felt betrayed after the vote. He couldn't vote. He has been living outside of the UK for over a decade so he couldn't vote. They have changed the law since then but he is worried sick about how this whole mess is going down. I don't know enough to ease his pain.
Howdy.

(205,260 posts)It didn't make sense to me, either, that they would vote to leave the European community. I'm sorry that your husband is feeling so bad over this, it sounds like he has a better understanding of the impact of the outcome than those who actually voted. I also hope that they can come up with a solution - this really does impact the global community.

(8,285 posts)It didn't make sense and then when the plans came in, it was all a mess too. Nobody knew what they were voting for and the Russians used social media to feed the lies to the people. Facebook is in big trouble too for not taking those sites down.
If we lived in an EU country, it would be a huge problem right now. Living in Switzerland means that they are working on their own UK/CH plan so that those of us here with UK passports (hubby) and I (american) can stay without any changes. But it does matter that UK leaves the EU because of the free trade amongst the countries.
Don't stay up too late!

(205,260 posts)We knew that it was Putin's aim to destabilize European governments - and then he moved on to the U.S. - and he used the web to do it without firing a shot. Thanks for sharing about this, we really are a global community now and everyone is affected.
And my dog and cat are both snoring - I need to join them soon...

One other little-known, but very meaningful for those affected, result of Brexit will relate to the border between Gibraltar and Spain. Although not nearly as consequential as the border between Northern Ireland and the Republic, Spain will likely once again assert its sovereignty over Gibraltar. Membership in the EU mooted that longstanding quarrel.
Both the UK and Spain signed some bilateral agreements w/r/t this issue in Nov 2018. But the MoUs describing the agreements apply only to the transition period. Under a hard Brexit, they would likely evaporate.

(205,260 posts)Thanks for sharing yet another important issue affected by the Brexit decision - we really need to realize that we're a global community now - and that when a conflict impacts one of us, it likely affects us all.

Never has John Donne's "No man is an island ..." been so true.
As for the UK-Gibraltar issue, here's a recent incident to show that this is very real. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/feb/17/spanish-warship-orders-gibraltar-boats-to-leave-british-waters?CMP=fb_gu&fbclid=IwAR2Azick57mWnmFHnySqnPxfaa5W2RY9rwWOi3unpSOA9sAVmPFuUo_Lis0

MANY years ago (1960s), I lived in Tangier, Morocco, just across from Spain and GIbraltar. At that time, Gibraltar was clearly an enclave. From Tangier, we could take ferries either to Gibraltar or to Spain. But once we made the journey, we literally could not enter Spain from Gibraltar, nor leave Spain for Gibraltar by land without a great deal of time, hassle and special papers. Practically speaking, it was impossible.
I lived in Morocco again in the 1980s and the problem no longer existed because the UK had become a full-fledged EU member.
How soon those who do not know their history forget! I hope that there is a special place in Hell for David Cameron, who allowed the Brexit referendum and then dumped the whole mess into May's lap. May herself should have stuck to her guns and called the Brexit what it is: a disaster! She was originally a "Remainer" and knew better.
Putin must be out of his mind with glee at watching the circuses in the UK and US right now.

And May was set up to fail indeed.
Putin, I'm sure is happy too.

It's funny but also some of the best in depth reporting on TV.
