Manipulation of masses is an art form. This is how it is done, imo.

(6,699 posts)I never gave a thought to our national songs before. Now, I have to think about whether or not to stand for the national anthem....whether or not I can enjoy the proud heritage I remember in light of the horrific challenge we have facing us today.
I'm worried.

(7,888 posts)Never, ever, did I dream of a fate so terrible that I must rise to the occasion. My fellow Americans are divided over a dumb, fat ass loser and criminal?

(1,376 posts)It's a modern arrangement of an 1861 Julia Ward Howe lyric to a tune that had been in widespread use for decades before the 1860s...
Unless you're expecting the masses to enlist in the US Volunteers and march on Richmond, not really certain what you're getting at here.

(8,652 posts)This is the song that men fought and died to in order to defeat the confederate traitors who were defending slavery and treason.
God bless the men and women who sacrificed and died to "make men free" and to keep our states unified.

(7,888 posts)louis, this is a discussion site for those with diverse views. You call them "confederate traitors" it does not help to unify, imo
"What am I getting at?" Unless we unify, we have a house divided as that shithead McConnell understands.

"all enemies, foreign and domestic".
By definition, every confederate soldier committed treason against this country. They all received amnesty (if they swore allegiance to the United States) but they all needed a pardon, for Treason. The confederate flag is a symbol of Treason.
We cannot unify a country by accepting Treason as an acceptable standard. If that be the case, Trump is OK if Treason is OK.

(4,066 posts)In fact, the biggest mistake made after the Civil war was being too damned unifying and not hanging every single Confederate General and politician. Maybe if we'd done that then we wouldn't have all those stupid statues to traitors who committed treason.

(24,324 posts)that these are very fine musicians... The competition to get into the best of the military bands is as stiff as some of the better symphony orchestras in the USA, not the best, but some very good ones... Entrance is by audition and the people auditioning are, with very rare exceptions, NOT military. If they are accepted into one of the bands, they then join the military, whether it is Army, Navy, Air Force, etc....
When I was teaching at a university music school and playing in the symphony in the same city, 1968-69??, I auditioned for the Navy, Marine and Army bands... to avoid the draft if it came to that.. I got in 2 of the 3. Fortunately a couple weeks later my 'draftable' period ended and I was home free.
WHEW!!

(34 posts)These are proud Americans, of every race, color and creed(I assume). I see no "MAGA", no inserts of the "Orange Idiot". The piece is our history. It is a beautiful pierce, done exquisitely., and with pride. As a vet and an American, it made me cry to listen and to appreciate the heart felt way in which this was presented, maid me proud again, for once, not ashamed as I have been for the last 2+ years.
You want propaganda, watch F89kedup News for 10 minutes, if you can handle it it for that long, I can't...that's propaganda on a Gobbles level. Just My opinion, I could be wrong, but doubt it.

(24,324 posts)to play in, in this case, the U S Army Field Band. Same with the other major service bands.
It is a 'paid gig,' just like playing in the St Louis Symphony. It just doesn't pay as well and the music isn't as good. :> ))
With very few exceptions, none of them were in the military before passing the audition. They THEN join the military.
This is not a comment on what, with a few exceptions, any of them feel playing. For some, maybe "proud' of something, but for many, just a gig.
The 2 people I know in this band hate doing stuff like this.... which is just 2, of course..
I know 3-4 people who put in 20 years in the various service bands in DC.. and 2 now in the West Point Band .. all of which are absolutely superb groups of musicians... They enjoye(d) it because it was music played very well, mostly playing concerts INSIDE... Whenever they had to play outside, or appear at some political event, etc.. they could have cared less.... just a gig..
Just a little background......

(2,690 posts)Not all of them toxic. It is something to be avoided, of course, but sometimes it consists not so much in lies -- as those coming out of our current WH -- but of a slanting of facts, an exaggeration of them, to stir the people to some desired action. Lots of it was employed leading up to and even during our own Revolutionary War -- even the Civil War.
But I agree with your general sentiment. This was NOT propaganda in any sense. It was, in fact, stirring and uplifting. Also, I could not help but note that there are a lot of very pretty women in that very talented orchestra and choir -- the conductor not the least of them.

(20,760 posts)Why select a brilliantly-rendered version of a traditional piece that has had military associations for well over a century, being performed by highly skilled service members in uniform, to remark on "manipulation"?
The dangerous manipulative shit is the insidious stuff that masquerades as being something it isn't, while carrying a delayed-action and cumulative emotional and cognitive response.
I get what you're saying, but you could find way more effective ways to make your point.
Thanks for posting, though. I quite enjoyed the performance. An amazing ensemble, and a remarkable arrangement.
interestedly,

(4,436 posts)I think it is rather exceptional talent.
As a U.S.Army retiree, I recognize the talent and hard work these men and women do in order to prepare to perform like this.
I also served in the 1980s not far from the barracks that held a Divisional Band, whose soldiers performed many field military duties, as well as their musical performances. I always admired their talents in the Army.
Our nation will continue to need a standing Army, and I support superior musical bands like this, who both keep our military traditions alive, and offer their talents in the service of our nation.
Thank you for ousting this video- I enjoyed it. (Note- those are all very senior military members, most of which appear to have serviced for ten or more years).
