5.0 out of 5 starsGreat book on the philosophy of gender

This book is a wonderful analysis of the way the patriarchy has through centuries defined the rules and laws of society to keep themselves appearing to be the "superior" gender. Dale Spender gives a good account of women who have challenged the idea that women are the "inferior" gender and why societies seldom heard of them, especially after a generation or two. Spender explains why every new generation of women has had to learn about this behavior and learn who those women were who have challenged the patriarchy because men have worked at making those women and their writings invisible. The book is very readable even as the resources are well documented. Any one interested in women's history, gender studies, the patriarchal system of power and why women and their writings disappeared from history should read this book.

This book should be required reading in the final year of secondary school. It is insightful, well researched and an eye opening view into the history of women in the English speaking Western World. This history needs to be taught as the history of men's ideas already is.

This book explains why we have to continually reinvent the wheel of knowledge about women's resistance to our own repression. If you want to know why you don't know of the existence of the AWESOME women who have come before you read this book! This book should be on every woman's shelf.
