They just kept it to themselves most of the time.

As a white woman I've had racist comments or jokes made to me 'on the sly', by other whites as long as far back as the 1960's. I don't think I did anything to encourage these 'confidences' but who knows how my unconscious bias may have come accross to them. Anyway, I can tell you that telling these people the comments aren't welcome stops them making them, but only for the moment and only to me. I'm sure it doesn't change their minds.
