(72,377 posts)why when first arrived because I wanted to be honest. I am a Green, yes, but I actually mostly vote for Democrats and was looking for ways for Greens and Democrats to work together. (Such as on election reform, environmental and social justice issues, and so forth.) The ** pResidency threw a lot of us together that way!

(1,259 posts)I doubt the Green party will make much difference in this election
Anyone who is not older than dirt, doesnt remember a real left, when 35% of labor was unionized, Tarrifs were imposed to keep American women and men working at secure jobs with health insurance, and a President who lied us into war would have been denounced, and his party tarnished with shame. Our present 2 party system has failed to address problems, and to study solutions. The trans Pacific Partnership, will squash what remaining hope you have.
I dont know what rules you have, but as a multi daily reader of this site, if we're not talking about Jill Stein, we had better start.

(20,226 posts)Let's be honest - on policy issues at least 50% of active Democrats agree more with the Green Party than with the official Democratic Party. But we operate under the realities of how elections pan out. In many cases voting Green or for another third party candidate has a far greater chance of contributing to a Republican victory than actually electing a progressive alternative to the frequently less than progressive Democrats. There are some rare cases where a Green or another progressive third party candidate might actually win or at least a vote for them will not contribute to a Republican victory. But those are exceptional cases.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,234 posts)presidential elections? How many seats of government do they control? I mean, is there even a Green dogcatcher, or do they want to skip all that and move directly into the Oval Office?
Douglas Carpenter
(20,226 posts)BTW: I am not a Green Party supporter. I have never voted for the Green Party or contributed to any of their campaigns precisely because of the reasons I clearly stated above. Though they hold positions far more consistent with the values of at least 50% of Democrats than the official Democratic Party and if they were a viable party that could win without electing crazy right-wing Republicans instead. I probably would support them. But that is not the reality that we face today.

(1,425 posts)but you are 100% correct in this assessment. The only time I ever hear anything from the Green Party is right before a presidential election, and it's all Democratic Party bashing, all the time. Where's the Green Party advocacy during a presidential term? Off-years are the times when more progressive/liberal folks (like me) should be calling for change. Do I wish Obama was more liberal? Yes. However, I'm voting for him with no reservations whatsoever, because I believe he's light-years better than the Teapublicans. The only thing the Green Party can accomplish is getting Rmoney/RAyn elected.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,234 posts)ultimate goal is. There aren't enough of them to actually elect anyone nationally, and there aren't enough of us dumb enough to throw our lot in with a bunch of losers. It's not hard to understand their frustration, people just aren't that into 'em.
As far as I can tell, their primary goal seems to be an overwhelming desire to blow up the Democratic Party, and that's about it. Sadly for them, that's not a platform from whence to launch a national campaign.
Heather MC
(8,084 posts)My County is very very blue. but the Dems have been putting more and more education funds in to building new soccer fields and diverting funds for beefing up the education and helping the teachers. Meanwhile every month a new Highrise pops up in my neighborhood which brings in a ton of new students.
The school my children attend 6 years ago was at 75% capacity now it's over 100%. They have turned closets into classrooms, to accomodate the growing size, a windowless class room is a depressing place no matter how many posters you hang.
The Green Party Candidate wants to reallocate funds to the school hire more teachers and get projects started to build bigger schools. That's what we need not a another astro turf soccer field.
Tarheel_Dem
(31,234 posts)there is no national groundswell of support for the Green Party. They may do well in really BLUE areas of the country, but their appeal should be to Independents and Democrats. And I gotta say that as a Democrat, if I ever thought I might be willing to take a chance on a Green, the 2000 election settled that internal dispute for me, once and for all. For me, personally, the face of the Green Party will always be that of Ralph Nader, and I can't get past my contempt for him. Unfortunately, that feeling extends to folks seeking office under that label.
Good luck with your school district. It sounds like a really horrible situation, and deplorable learning environment.

(20,226 posts)sinister purposes. I am not going to vote for Jill Stein. I am going to support and vote for Barack Obama. Because the simple reality of how our system is configured and how elections actually pan out in the real world - a vote for Jill Stein and the Green Party is far more apt to throw an election to the crazy and sinister extremist who now run the Republican Party. But all of that aside..when it come to her critique, when it comes to her positions, when it comes the reality of who both parties ultimately serve.. in my heart I know she is right.

(8,084 posts)I wouldn't waste my vote on someone I know that has no chance of winning.

The political realities simply do not exist at this time to create a viable national third party that does not have as a dangerous side affect - throwing elections to the craziest and most reactionary political party in modern American history. The consequences of that are just too grave to risk it. But I agree that in the best of all possible worlds - we should have that alternative. But the political realities dictate that we just don't.
tama
(9,137 posts)dictate that real politics - common matters - take place at the grass roots. Partisan politics at the top of the power pyramid do not need much attention IMHO, as such attention mostly makes us divided and brings out the nasty side of tribalism. I don't consider voting important, as the puppets will have their strings pulled by the banksters any case.

rhetorical than reality - that when you are dealing with that much power even relatively small differences around the margins - you end up with differences that do in fact affect a lot of peoples' lives. Although the fundamentals of foreign policy would not change that much at least on the fundamental issues - the rise of the neoconservatives and their return to power in a potential Romney/Ryan administration could even mean a dramatic increase in direct military intervention. Who wins would not normally change the fundamentals of American foreign policy or the fundamentals of how the economy operates - it will nonetheless make the difference on matters that affect millions of peoples live. If the Republicans win at the very least there will no doubt be at least several hundreds of thousands of fewer children who will have breakfast in the morning before school. There will be at least several hundreds of thousands of fewer elderly people who will receive their meals on wheels. There will be at least several hundreds of thousands of students who will not be able to complete their education. There will be at least several hundreds of thousands of senior citizens who will not receive help with their heating bills during the winter or their prescriptions through Medicaid or children who will not have their medical and dental check ups. If the Republicans win the Department of Labor will see its only mission as a police agency to shut down labor organizers. The Environmental Protection agency will see its only mission as an instrument to fight environmental regulations. So even if a vote for the Democrats over the Republicans in simply a vote for one faction of the ruling classes over another faction - - for the sake of the differences that do cash out in the live of real people - I feel morally obligated to cast the vote on behalf of all of those whose lives will be significantly better if the Democrats win and significantly worse if the Republicans win.
tama
(9,137 posts)And I'm not against that, or against voting third party or not voting at all. Not for me to judge.
What I feel is important is what ever you do with your vote, is not to get fooled into making politics a tribalist support for a football team party and/or expecting the party political class to deliver the changes that are essential for our evolutionary adaptation. It's a question of our identities and where we invest our emotional power. Inclusive grass roots movements of connecting people peer to peer and with the whole environment is what I feel is most important. Voting for lesser evil is no problem as long as you don't sell your soul in the process.

(167 posts)There is more to the democratic process than excluding the views of people that may not be the main Democratic candidate. Somehow the private Commission on Presidential Debates has co-opted our election process and restricts the debates issues important to progressive Democrats.
I think there is a real opportunity here for progressive Democrats to use the exclusion from the debates for publicity of issues that are being ignored:
10 Huge Issues Being Ignored in the Presidential Campaigns:

All presidential candidates who have qualified for placement on enough state ballots to win the Electoral College and the Presidency of the U.S. must be included in the presidential debates.
Especially, those candidates, on the ballot in over half the states, that have qualified for and accepted our Federal Presidential Campaign Matching Funds! (hint, those are the two being excluded)

(167 posts)I've added the video for the expanded vice presidential debate with Joe Biden, Paul Ryan, Cheri Honkala and Luis Rodriguez held on October 11, 2012.to www.OpenUpTheDebates.org
You will find the expanded debate to be quite a bit different than the private, limited debate. http://OpenUpTheDebates.org
Also present are commentaries from other candidates and information videos about the private Commission on Presidential Debates.
