(6,133 posts)And construction workers wear dust masks through much of their day especially painters wearing respirators as they work. What is the big deal about wearing a bit of a mask to save lives of those who have health problems?
The thing is that herd immunity is not a thing until you have a vaccine. Once everybody, just about, is immune because they got the vaccine, that those who cannot take the vaccine for medical reasons are protected by the herd.
We are protecting the herd now by wearing masks. Its all we have until there is a vaccine.
Anything else is pure medieval.

(3,023 posts)People are wimps and then they start with "freedom" or whatever to help them cope. They should try a military gas mask and NBC suit for a couple of days. They'd lose the last little bit of their mind that is left.

(2,809 posts)I also have asthma, largely dust exposure induced attacks. So wearing my mask actually tends to help my condition, preserves the space around me, protects my patients.
Living in a relatively rural area of California, we're dealing with a lot of FreeDumb loving anti-mask, anti-give-two-shits idiots.
There are only two grocery stores locally that adamantly enforce mask wearing. Already had some incidents with the dipshits at the doorway insisting on being unrestricted mouth breathers. Several others that are not doing anything at all, even have unmasked employees.
I must do laundry today. Usually I'll just see if it's crowded with idiots, or largely masked people in there. Doesn't always work, matter of fact one loudmouth, conspiracy theory spouting idiot scared everyone out the the whole facility until he was done spitting his ranting speeches all over everything. There were about 20 people waited outside the store, finally the idiot left, we propped open the door and let the place air a while, then donned our masks, one woman distributed a box of gloves she had, and we finished our laundry. I take the dry stuff to my truck bed for folding there. Gets fun when the wind stirs up, but cest la vie. I like the way a lot of people are bringing their own disinfectant wipes and going after the area they are using for the moment. I've never seen the place cleaner than lately.
There's the danger of trying to tell someone to please put on a face covering to wind up with the maskless fools spitting, coughing or just plain loudly pontificating in your face about restricting their free dumbs.
It seems there isn't a very good way around this conundrum sometimes.
