For the time being, the gig suits her personally and she has power and success. (21,646 posts)It s not a passing phase long family ties to the group
Current and former members of People of Praise said that Ms. Barrett and her husband, who have seven children, both belong to the group, and that their fathers have served as leaders. The community, founded in 1971, claims about 1,800 adult members in 22 locations in North America and the Caribbean.
The group believes in prophecy, speaking in tongues and divine healings, staples of Pentecostal churches that some Catholics have also adopted in a movement called charismatic renewal.
The People of Praise was an early leader in the flowering of that movement in North America. It is ecumenical, but about 90 percent of its members are Catholic.
To fulfill the groups communitarian vision, unmarried members are sometimes placed to live in homes with married couples and their children, and members often look to buy or rent homes near other members.

(8,200 posts)People of Praise is a secret organization that has much in common with Opus Dei. They are attempting to enforce their beliefs on Catholics and society as a whole that has unanimously abandoned their opposition to contraceptive birth control, abortion or acceptance of homosexuality. They are basically evangelicals and the remnants of the movement that took hold at Notre Dame that was short lived. The vast majority of Catholics have rejected their absurd positions and either quietly remain members or like millions have left the church. They are uncompromising in their strict adherence to no accommodation with anyone who doesn't agree with their beliefs. It would difficult to find anyone was less qualified to be an objective judge of constitutional law.

(2,065 posts)The whole heads and handmaids thing was not immediately apparent - guess I'll have to dig deeper into their site. What it seems to me is that this is kind of a Christian Trojan horse nomination. Trump knows that everyone is mourning the passing of a great female Supreme Court justice - so his leading candidate is a woman, but that's the only resemblance she bears to RBG.

(2,690 posts)This is a physically attractive woman with a look of insanity in her eyes.
"Head" and "Handmaid", really? That, my friends, is the give-away, here. I read somewhere that she is alleged to have said in an interview that, if it came down to a choice between following the constitution or the dictates of her church, she would follow her church. I'm sure she'll be asked and her answer will define her place in the history of the SCOTUS forever.
Personally, my first question would be -- and I'm sure she's going to be asked again and again -- "Since your nomination was made despite the Senate leader's insistence that such nominations not go forward if made in the last year of a presidential term, an insistence that resulted in the Senate refusal to even hold a hearing on the nomination of Merrick Garland, your colleague, how do you reconcile accepting the nomination you received? Was it not given you under a cloud of blatant hypocrisy? And doesn't such a cloud besmirch not only the nomination but also your own integrity as a justice?"
Yeah, I'd love to hear her response. I doubt she'd answer directly. Yeah, yeah, she'd still get on the court, even if she dodged the question, but it would be nice to have her own words (or deliberate lack thereof) proving she's as amoral and dishonorable as the male whores who support her.

Got to ask: What is it about some people that they need to transmogrify a perfectly normal religion?
A need to belong, a need to be special, a need to stand out from the crowd? A need to have others rule their lives, and make important life decisions for them?
Turns out 'A handmaids tale' is a documentary, not fiction!
Only in America!
