I understand that no one in comedy can remain hot and consistent for years on end. Both in quality of guests and issues, he really has been in a slump. Everyone's been thrown for the last ten months. Tonight's exceptional show has probably something to do with HBO adjustments, and the studio team getting their mojo back.

He should get credit for his sheer longevity, which is proof that thinking man's humor remains the best kind.
