(11,098 posts)The corruption is Trump's. If, as it appears, the pardon was issued in a really stupid attempt to obstruct justice, then Trump has committed a crime. Nevertheless, the pardon power is very nearly unchecked. A president can grant a pardon to whomever he will and the grant is effect.
I accept the argument that a president cannot grant a pardon - or anything else - to him or herself. The only other limitation is that a president cannot stop an impeachment, e.g. of a federal judge with a pardon.

(2,993 posts)That a president shouldn't be able to pardon himself or herself goes without saying, except because the orange-haired moron leaving office in January is openly suggesting it, we now evidently have to specifically make it clear.
A president should not be able to pardon family members or those whose crimes took place during the president's administration, especially if those crimes were committed to benefit the president.
This needs to be codified in a constitutional amendment.
No, I'm not holding my breath on that.
