He thought the whole college, class, speech idea was legitimate. I don't suppose he even researched any aspect. He was asked to run through his speech before the empty seats so that light and sound levels could be figured. He did that and was later told that the graduation had been canceled.

edit to add: This is what I think I remember from Rachel's exposure of it last week.
