WATCH: How the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine works - PBS NewsHour

Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine was the third to be authorized in the United States, but it was the first to deliver full protection with one shot. Also different from the mRNA-based vaccines developed by Pfizer and Moderna, this one uses a "viral vector" -- in this case, an adenovirus -- to inoculate recipients against the coronavirus.

On Thursday, Johnson & Johnson announced that new data from small studies suggest that its vaccine protects recipients against the more transmissible Delta variant of the virus, and that overall protection lasts for at least eight months.

Here’s a look at how it works.

Oldest son got J&J and youngest got Moderna. We didn’t plan it that way it’s just their first vaccine offered to us when it was our turn.

As we were advised by Dr. Fauci. I was kinda tickled to learn that he got the Moderna, too!

But it is reassuring to learn that all three are effective against the deadly Delta variant, so I thought this was important.

I'm guessing he's about the same age as my uncle - mid 80s - and fairly active and healthy. I was so excited when I was finally able to get my first vaccine shot that I wasn't shy about telling people. And he told me that he didn't intend to get the vaccine since his daughter is a nurse at the hospital and she isn't getting vaccinated and he gets his medical advice from her!

And a younger guy who overheard the conversation said he wasn't getting it since "we don't know what's in it" and "he didn't want to be a guinea pig!"

I have two friends who got the vaccine early on since they also work in the local hospital, one has a clerical job and the other sees psych patients in the ER, has to wear all kinds of PPR. Both of them got the Pfizer, but had to drive downstate to a major hospital to get it - and they also got a bonus for making the trip! And I also have a friend who teaches who drove across the entire state to get the vaccine since that was also before it was offered locally.

But now it's available at pharmacies, pharmacies in grocery stores, Walmart and at a large state run site in the old Sears store at the nearby local mall - many of them taking walk ins. That's where I took my brother and it was quite busy - and when he got his second shot in May, I also saw young teens there with their Moms - I noticed since I saw a couple of them (including a boy with half green hair) stop outside afterwards to pose for pix!

I will never understand it either. This week the local paper reported 5 more cases in the county - despite unprecedented vaccine availability.

She is now a wingnut as well. The saddest thing of all they will not get vaccinated for covid. She isn’t vaccinating my grandchildren which scares the hell out of me. To say the relationship is strained is an understatement.

That has to be upsetting and scary as hell! My own brother was "vaccine reluctant," but I kept after him, reminded him of how we both had been vaccinated against deadly diseases our whole lives, polio, etc. My brother is also agoraphobic, doesn't like leaving the house, so there's also that. But when the nearby state run site at the local mall started taking walk-ins, I offered to take him and he went with me. I think he just got sick of my nagging, LOL. And he said that he could get to the appointment for his second shot on his own, but I showed up and took him for that one, too.

I sure wish that you could convince your daughter. I blame TFG for the low vaccination rate in this country, though it's readily available now in most places, since we know from Bob Woodward's tapes that he knew the truth early on. And I still can't imagine what he got out of poisoning so many minds, it's not like he got any income out of people getting sick and we know that's all he cares about.

She is convinced that it will mess with her fertility and she wants more children. She was given all childhood vaccines growing up. The family she married into has gone full Q. When my husband suffered a massive stroke 4 years ago and I was trying to oversee his care in a rehab facility and take care of the other two still minor children in my home and working full time, she went around the family saying I wasn’t making an effort to see her or her family. 🙁. My grandchildren do not even have the normal vaccines on board let alone covid. 🥲🥲
She uses her children as emotional blackmail against us. It’s been really difficult. I had to remove her from life insurance and retirement beneficiary documents as I no longer trust her to carry out MY wishes, or share with her siblings.
I don’t know what happened or why but she checked her intellect at the door and adopted the backward thinking of these “Christians”. When her father was in the rehab facility learning to walk again those “christian” people never called to see how he was doing or offered to help in any way.

One of the reminders that I used to persuade my reluctant brother was that we'd gotten vaccines since we were born to protect us from deadly diseases - polio, diphtheria, smallpox, I don't even know. I even remember getting them right in school when we were kids. And I know that kids aren't allowed in school without the proper inoculations. A few years ago, a friend of mine returned to college and she had to get the MMR before she could attend classes, I drove her to get it.

So your daughter hasn't been adversely affected by the vaccines she got growing up, she still has kids - and those kids also are required to be inoculated to protect them - and others - before they can go to school anywhere. Though I'm sure you've thought of all that. I don't know what it takes since the evidence is right out there, before President Biden got this massive vaccination program implemented, hundreds of thousands of people were getting sick and dying. And that's the only reason that we don't need to remain inside 24/7 like we did a year ago. *sigh*

She’s going to homeschool her kids so they won’t have to get vaccines. California has zero exceptions for children to enroll in public, charter or private schools. It’s all so heartbreaking. I worry about the little ones who can not decide for themselves.
Even her immune compromised father is not an incentive for her to get vaccinated. She doesn’t care if she sees us or not. I don’t give up because the kids are innocent and I want them to know who we are. She is exactly like the stereotypical white woman repuke we all hear about. They truly live in another reality.

Thank you so much for this. I got the J&J in early March. I honestly didn't know which shot I was getting until the needle was in my arm...Our pharmacy called our shop and said they had one shot available if one of us could could get there in 20 minutes. I made a mad dash. Since then, because of all the chit chat around the internet and the MSM, I felt like I got an inferior vaccine and I've fretted about it ever since. This made me feel a lot better.
