(206,340 posts)One works with psych patients in the ER and the other works in the office. This was in January and the vaccine was not yet available in my part of the state (the Northeast), the only vaccine sites in the state at that time were New York City and one at the opposite end of the state. But hospital workers here were encouraged to drive downstate to a major hospital to get the Pfizer and both of my friends did and were given a $100 bonus for doing so. We have had Covid cases here, all cases and breakouts, even now, make the front page of the local paper.
Of course, now there are vaccine sites all over the area, pharmacies, pharmacies in groceries, Walmart, plus a large state-run site in the old Sears store in the local mall - which has lighted signs out on the main road directing people there. I got mine as soon as I was able - had to drive a way downstate myself to get the Moderna at CVS since the closest CVS was fully booked in the beginning.
Meanwhile, I know an older man (mid 80s) who I see at local meetings who told me that he's not getting the vaccine since his daughter who is a nurse at the local hospital isn't getting it and he gets medical advice from her. So, unfortunately, an incentive doesn't work for everybody. I also have another friend who teaches who drove to the opposite end of the state to get vaccinated with no other incentive than not getting Covid! But then, my three friends are also fellow Democrats, so that likely makes a difference, too. *sigh*

(7,640 posts)Did they not learn in school about vaccines and how many lives they have saved over the years? Hell, we learned that much in grade school.
Even the two year nursing degrees should have added enough smarts to overcome whatever woo they might have picked up on social media.
One of my girlfriends graduated a 4 year college in nursing and then went on to get her masters. And you know what she springs on me? Aromatherapy!
Apparently she started taking medical advice from her hairdresser.
Its a crazy old world is sometimes.
