It was made popular by a group called the Comedian Harmonists, called Wochenend und Sonnenschein.

It came out in 1930, a year after the American song.

The lyrics, translated from the German, are:

Weekend, sunshine
Do you need more to be happy?

Weekend and sunshine
And then alone with you in the forest -
I don't need anything else to be happy!
Weekend and sunshine!

The lark moves over us
She sings a song just like us
All the birds happily join in
Weekend and sunshine!
No car, no road
And nobody in our vicinity!

Deep in the forest just me and you -
The Lord turns a blind eye
Because he gives us happiness
Weekend and sunshine!

"Only six days are of work
But on the seventh day you should rest!"

George II

My father was a huge supporter of FDR, and he had the record of the song, played it every once in a while. This was the early 1950s, only 20 years after Roosevelt was elected.

It's old style music, but back then it was "current", and I grew to like it too.

Great side story, thanks.
