10. The real power and driving force are the ultra-wealthy.

The wealthy, including those who are just dumb luck heirs to fortunes, are convinced that they should be totally in charge or have someone who will act to provide them with the controlling positions of authority, i.e., a plutocracy. Fascism is the system that does exactly that. This has been their goal since the inception of the nation. In reality they actually did control virtually every aspect of government until the election of Roosevelt who provided the working class with the power, unionization, to challenge the system and demand a fair price for their labors. The dramatic improvement of that revolt is a long list including child labor, dangerous working conditions, starvation wages, social security, the standard workweek, compulsory education, etc. Each and every one of these measures was fought against by the Republicans until many were forced to comply due to the ground swell that erupted. Unfortunately, in my opinion, the Democratic Party lost its way and failed to continue to support the working class they had courted and put their party in power. It seems that the Republicans are using the same conditions, although not as extreme as earlier, with the same solution except with the promise of the power of unlimited power of the presidency and will use any method, including rigging elections by voter and gerrymandering suppression to actually negating the votes of those who oppose them.

How it will end could very well depend on whether the apathy of the citizens can be overcome before it is too late and they can be awakened before the Republic is destroyed.

...why the Republicans are willing to put their base at risk: to escalate fear in the public at large and facilitate the mindset that the public needs the protection of a strongman, authoritarian leader to keep them safe.

I've always suspected Trump was just a pawn in a bigger plot and this information makes that more plausible. Trump supporters don't seem to understand that Trump is just a place holder. The 75-year old will not hold up much longer and what they get to replace him may make some right wingers realize they've jumped from the frying pan into the fire. But it will be too late to save our nation and therefore democracies across the globe.

They need to consider which authoritarian would they trust to wield control over the biggest arsenal of weapons in the world. Powder keg. Socialism upsets right wingers, but they seem to have no problem with fascism and the corruption it facilitates.

been the most important factor in getting us here the last 30 years. ignoring it has been the biggest political mistake in history.

americans could give democracy a huge boost just by ending that ignorance and recognizing that a major source of the facism depends on advertisers, ad agencies, universities, and pro sports teams that have no clue, nor would support that fascism, if they got saw a few protests and boycotts.

it would also help to recognize that fascism, authoritarianism, racism, sexism are age-old strategies/behaviors used by humans to create certainty to compensate for stress and fear caused by the Certainty Deficit Disorder, which along with greed, is a heritable susceptibility to sex on the wrong brain, caused by masturbation with the wrong hand.

permitted to flourish unchecked in a landscape of free hate speech with only cant yell fire in a theatre limit.

Every other industrialized nation has robust, enforceable and workable hate speech laws, and look ma, no insurrection.

Also they all have a first amendment, it’s not unique.

a 'strongman' to keep them safe.

C.R.T. and that brown people are taking your job / tax money and the left is stealing elections are OBVIOUS points of fear the the right have been using.

But now, after watching this I'm also leaning toward Stanley's summation that the GOP does NOT WANT COVID TO GO AWAY.

How truly sick can a political party be?

The most simple way to preserve democracy is to jail the lawbreakers. No one is above the law: not the Trumps, Gymn Jordan, Hawley, Cruz, Boebert, Gozar, McCarthy, Perry - they ALL need to be tried.
