Janai Nelson, associate director-counsel for the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, talks with Rachel Maddow about the case of Pamela Moses, who was sentenced to 6 years in prison over a misunderstanding of her eligibility to register to vote, a significantly longer sentence than for Republican men who actually cast illegal votes. Aired on 02/03/2022.

(29,204 posts)they want every black person who committed a crime (ever) to not vote... by sentencing her to 6 years for attempting to REGISTER to vote (with the help of the parole officer)... they are sending a message.

(205,363 posts)He also didn't realize he was not yet eligible, so he was immediately locked up as well. I remember that there was a GoFundMe which raised a great deal to pay for his bail and a lawyer. Wonder what these 2 voters have in common??

(4,305 posts)We must help Pamela Moses AND this guy! What about Go Fund Me?
It would be nice to see that both of them get enough money to live without financial problems for a VERY long time!

(205,363 posts)The story and the GoFundMe link were posted here at the time. His cause went national and he received many times what he needed to make bail and he retained a lawyer who was determined to fight for his cause. But that was only one case, the issue is obviously persistent and systemic as this woman's case demonstrates. She never even voted, only mistakenly got permission that she was now eligible, yet she inexplicably faces prison while the white men who knowingly committed voter fraud got probation.

I could tell she was angry before she even started the story. In fact I dont think Ive ever seen her so angry.
I would hope her show would be helpful in building awareness of any efforts to mitigate this wrongful decision.
An organization called free hearts is helping her. I will contact them and post about what I find.

(6,591 posts)I think we oversimplify when we say it's just about race. I mean, it is about race, but it's about more than just race.
It's about a belief in superiority based on income level, ethnicity, color, religion, & more.

(6,828 posts)I'm thinking that 99% of them hear it loudly and clearly.
However, since this sort of injustice stands so starkly, even unto our "modern times", I wonder if there is a tendency toward soft stepping around the subject for some Democrats who have, perhaps, legitimate concern for the slim margins of their elections. That, to the extent that it is true, is the ultimate in "voter intimidation" and shouts to a falseness in American democracy and grumbles of an unrepentant stain on our collective American soul.

(20,629 posts)McDonald in the back 16 times. BTW, he was released yesterday, after serving only 3 years, for "good behavior".
Van Dyke is white. McDonald, 17, was black. It is a case that roiled the city, caused widespread protests and sparked court mandated police reforms after a blistering report by the U.S. Department of Justice. Among the reports findings: Chicago Police routinely used excessive force and violated the rights of people of color.
It was Oct. 20, 2014, when a Chicago police responded to reports that a black teenager carrying a knife was breaking into cars. Laquan McDonald had slashed some tires of a truck and was being followed on a southwest side Chicago street by a numbers of police officers waiting for a unit with a Taser.
Jason Van Dyke and his partner were among the the last officers to arrive. Van Dyke got out of his car, and within seconds, he shot McDonald 16 times many of the bullets striking McDonald after he lay crumpled on the ground.

(45,442 posts)so appropriate punishment should be assigned according to how closely someone resembles historical supreme court justices.
If someone "looks foreign" their passport and birth certificate are invalid and they are not allowed to vote. If they look Russian, it's OK.
