(205,780 posts)And Russia has statues and plaques and museums all over as reminders of the terrible losses they suffered during WWII - so I find it hard to believe that they would intentionally want to start another war. But there was a lot of hope back then under Gorbachev and his policies of Glasnost and Perestroika, openness and transparency. But now that the WWII generation is mostly gone, could they have forgotten so soon? Putin is ex-KGB and it appears to me that he wants to return to the days of the Soviet Union...

(205,780 posts)I visited the USSR in the late 80s with my grandmother and her peace group. Russia suffered terribly during WWII which was fought on its own soil - and everywhere there are memorials, they have plagues in schools commemorating students from that school who were lost and they even have museums in schools to teach the students about the horrors of that war. I cannot imagine that they've forgotten...

(40,216 posts)It should be noted that there are mass graves all over Central and Eastern Europe, most recently dug by the Nazis during WWII for the purpose of mass murders. So maybe that.

(205,780 posts)At the time (late '80s), I understood that he was "out of favor." However, Stalin was not Russian. he was Georgian. And when I asked why there were so many statues of Stalin I was told that he was very popular in Georgia since he killed so many Russians...
