U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said Russian President Vladimir Putin's move to place nuclear deterrence forces on high alert is "totally unacceptable."

1. Sometimes tact has its limits.

His action was reckless, dangerous, evil and maybe even game-changing.

There are probably better words for this, but it's a start.

3. It probably depends on your definition of 'all costs'.

Preemptively nuking the Russian populace is not where I was going with this, but the possibility of Nato involvement to preempt a Russian nuclear attack. Somehow? Something more stern than 'unacceptable' is in order.

5. Men with too much power, always seems to be a recipe for big problems.

The solution is not to give such power to one person in the first place, and therein lies the solution for the future.
