That sadistic hateful punishing spiteful God you threaten people with is just in your fantasy mythology. Screw him and you. Religion suffers because of people like you.
Spirituality is taking over as the path to God because God is not "a Being"...God IS Being...which is why your existence is so far from the nature of God's Being that you make a mockery of all that is sacred. Forcing your beliefs on others through might and law is exactly like the Nazis and you'd fit right in. Condemning others with God's name is self destructive so piss off and take "YOUR God" with you.

although I think a bystander to either theological position about the nature of God would look at your argument for your god and say you've made one up to fit your idea of god too. So, playing the devil's advocate here - no pun intended - what logical argument would you put forth to support your description that God "is being" rather than "a being"? And how does one determine OBJECTIVELY what is sacred and what is not?

Notice that I'm not attacking you or criticizing your view; I'm just asking a question.

I would say that all concepts of "god" are limited to what our brains can comprehend. It seems to me that all the "holy books" and "holy scriptures" of all the major religions are subject to interpretation.

I just finished a comparative religion class, and as an assignment I wrote about sharia law. Of course, to the average American this sounds like the worst Islam can offer! I had imagined when I started out that I would find out about a bunch of nasty and horrific stuff that sharia law dictates a muslim must do. But in reality most of sharia law is about how to pray, the importance of living within the laws and rules of a society, and to use your own intellect and reasoning.
The fundamentalists themselves have chosen to focus on the oppressive and often barbaric punishments. Reasonable muslims incorporate sharia law into their lives the way that makes sense to them.

The same can be said about the bible and believing that the earth only 6000 years old. Fundamentalists claim that science is wrong and it's just satan messing with our minds, while reasonable christians study the bible without having to literally believe all of it.

There obviously is no objective way to call anything "sacred". The notion that something is sacred is a human invention.

(edit for grammar)

In fact, I appreciate your thoughtful post! That's great that you took a class on comparitive religions. The only reservation I would offer in response is your use of the subjective term 'reasonable' in referring to Christians that interpret the Bible using a consistent systematic hermneutic which results in a conclusion that you happen to agree with. I say this because there are those who I disagree with, but having reviewed the basis for their conclusions can appreciate why they came to their particualr conclusion. That said, there are a variety of religious practitioners that hold to a particular position soley on the basis of having been raised to believe it or having only one perspective presented to them to the exclusion of any others.

Thanks for sharing your perspective in an irenic fashion!

Edited to add this: Liked your opening thought about what our brains could conceive and would only add that, if God exists (that is the eternal God of the Bible), then His living in an eternal realm and our living in a non-eternal realm would require Him to reveal Himself to humanity for us to have any assurance of an accurate view of His being. Of course, the Christian, Jew and even Islamic adherent would say that He has succeded in doing this in a variety of ways. If this is true, then an accurate - although limited to the extent He has revealed Himself to humanity - view could indeed be obtained beyond our limited of our brains to conceive. Just a thought.

The Nazis "dejudized" Jesus claiming he not only was not a Jew but that he had fought against the Jews and they killed him.

Hitler was constantly using religious imagery:

Intertwined with militarism:

And the Catholic Church supported him:

Oh the poor little Christians. Who will think of the children...?

Give me a fucking break. We have this clown that lives in our neighborhood that put a sign is his front yard. "Protect the Freedom of Religion". So I put one in my yard, "Protect You Freedom From Religion!" I swear there are days when he drives by the house and looks like he wants to drive his car into the house. I LOVE it...

Right wing religions empower psychopaths (aka wolves in sheep's clothing) who will promise to, with one hand, make religious views the law of land. Consequently, religious stupidity politically imposed makes for some really good distractions.

Meanwhile, amongst the distractions, the psychopaths other hand is fleecing the country, making war on the defenseless, and blaming the innocent victims who become so distraught they go to church and get saved(supposedly).

The moral of the story is...
When it comes to right wing religion, any pretense of morality is nothing more then the cloak of evil.

1) FEAR - to drive people to the church as well as keep the ones they already have in it

2) MONEY - because people are more and more falling away from the churches...money is drying up. based on statistics they are well aware that is not going to get better for them unless they pray (pun intended) on the ignorant with fear and lies.
