(205,320 posts)He wants to rule the world - and he inspired TFG, who aspires to the same thing. I actually visited the USSR in the late '80s - my grandmother joined a peace group that had a "sister town" in the Caucasus Mountains and invited me to go along. I thought she'd gone insane since I grew up believing that the Russians hated us - but it turned out to be the trip of a lifetime, hopes were high there under Gorbachev since he'd instituted progressive reforms. And the Russians we met - both other peace groups and on the street - were very pleased to meet Americans.
We were supposed to visit Kiev, but Chernobyl happened, so we visited Tbilisi in what was then Soviet Georgia instead. And the hatred they felt towards the Russians had to be similar to what Ukraine is experiencing now. There were numerous statues of Stalin - who was out of favor in Russia - so I asked. And I was told that Stalin was Georgian, not Russian, and he was revered "because he killed so many Russians."
There was such hope in Russia back then that my heart breaks for the people. But I also understand what's going on in Ukraine - ex-KGB Putin wants to recreate the Soviet empire and he needs to be stopped, defeated, put out of business for good. This must never happen again.
