(53,778 posts)aggressiveness as his navy, whatever there is of it, can easily be blocked from access to the Atlantic, what with Finland and Sweden petitioning to join NATO and thus make the Baltic Sea a NATO lake.
And that leaves the narrow Dardanelles and Bosporus straits between Europe and Asia as his Black Sea fleet's only access to the Atlantic, and they can also be easily blocked from entering the Mediterranean Sea from these straits, their route to the Atlantic Ocean.
That leaves his ocean access just to the distant far east ports 11 times zones away on the Pacific.
Bummer.
Pootie Poot needs to curb his ambitions. Geography is just not on his side as NATO is strategically positioned to easily defeat him if he gets froggy. That's just the way it is. He never should've invade Ukraine as his army has been shown to be third rate and his navy...well...there's little hope for it if a larger war breaks out.

(54,379 posts)The Atlantic is perfectly accessible from the port of Murmansk, which, due to global warming, hasnt been as iced-in as it used to be in the winter. What they want is a warm-water port, and Assad letting them use that naval base in Syria is only assured as long as Assad is thereand it IS after all still the Middle East.
I dont THINK he would use nuclear weapons on the Ukrainians, as the response would end life as both we and the Russians know it. But a wounded animal is at its most dangerous when cornered. We shouldnt even be drawing up contingency plans to take Putin out. That is a task best left to his own people, who will act if they feel he is no longer of any benefit as their leader.
