1. Government has 2 basic functions

First and foremost, it seeks to preserve itself. The worse it is, the more strongly and viciously it pursues this.

Second, it wants to preserve at least the semblance of order, meaning no overt protests, no blocked traffic, no burning tires. Again, the worse that government has become, the worse the reprisals become.

These Mullahs are now at least as bad as the Shah was. I don't know if this is the uprising that will succeed, but if the US keeps its paws off, it might. Iran is an extremely secular country and people are thoroughly sick of religious oppression and hypocrisy.
