because the lesson of most wars of the last half of the 20th century until right now is that people, no matter how little they might have, will fight like hell to keep it and occupiers are going to lose the occupation, even if they win an initial war.

Our military needs to learn that lesson. Putin is certainly learning it right now.

What will Ukrainians have when this is over?

Ruins. Rubble.

And when Ukraine is rebuilt, it will be far more modern than Russia, which eventually ordinary Russians will get to see. Long term that's not good for Russian dictators. This will turn out to be a catastrophic mistake by Putin.

They rebuilt and so will Ukraine.

What Europe had after WWII and Ukraine will have after this war, is autonomy and freedom from fascist dictatorship. What kind of a "life" do people have with it?

The world tried the route of appeasement to fascists in the 1930s. Didn't work with Germany and won't work with Russia.

This is a hard wired trait in the human psyche.

Obviously present since the beginning of human existence.

Humans loathe living in captivity under brutal conditions.

But yes Putin's goal is to totally destroy Ukraine so that it will never
function as a country again. NATO will not want it. No hope as
a functioning country on any level is Putin's goal.

They have been through this before.

Even if they had surrendered, there would have been a strong resistance and eventually Russia would realize they were too troublesome to try to keep.

I would suggest you peruse the videos of the 2014 revolution at the Maidan. They dug up their pavement to throw at police and militay loyal to Yanukovych. They know how to throw a revolution. They also know how to rebuild.

Face it, Putin stepped in shit up to his eyeballs. It's up to him to declare victory and GTFO, then do what he should have done in the first place, negotiate his lease on Sevastopol harbor in good faith instead of bad.

He did accomplish one good thing for Ukraine. He united the east and west parts of the country against Russia. There is nothing like a common enemy to provoke national unity.

This isn't the first one for which the creators gave a sensationalist title that was not reflective of the content.

Ukraine keeps it's territory, + Crimea?

or

Russia keeps what it had at the start of the war and one or two cities on the coast?

I can't see either side willing to give anything.
