I do not see how the two skills are mutually exclusive. If anything true introspection helps one to develop true empathy.

this film should be required viewing in their prison cells.

while Bradley Manning is locked up.

I am going to start now -- actually write some sentences to try to express empathy or ask questions reflecting empathy to use with people who drive me nuts. Need to stop the nuts business and try to break thru.
