Put the eldest of my 3 little dogs to sleep (Monday, 10-30-17).

Last edited Wed Nov 1, 2017, 12:49 PM - Edit history (1)

He was twelve, an odd little dog, not demonstratively affectionate. Was companioned by the Chihuahua for ten years. His only exuberance was for running and barking along the fence for the mail carrier daily and the garbage trucks weekly. Oh, and one time he ran along the edge of the surf at the beach with his ears flapping. Ever since the young new dog arrived in August, the old pair seemed to have the air knocked out of them, then this month he went downhill. Well, as a Loungeteer said recently, our companion animals have "a life of luxury" with us.

When it's obvious that our pets are suffering and death is imminent, it is kindness to put them as more important than our attachment to them. It's not easy to put a pet down, but you saved him from weeks of suffering. You did the right thing.

Grieve not,
nor speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me

Dogs are like people, each one is unique with his or her own personality and we love them for who they are. Run on little Sancho Panza with your ears flapping in the wind.

My heart goes out to you.

I've been through many difficult things, but to me, losing a pet is the worst.

I've had to put down 2 so far. The one I have now does not seem to like me very much, but I'll be devastated when he goes.

I'm glad you posted about your pup. I smiled when I read about the running along the fence and barking at the garbage truck...that's what all of my dogs have done.

Try to remember those thoughts of your dog...they will bring you happiness in the future.

That sucks. We had to put down our 12 year old lab a few months ago because of advanced cancer. Terrible experience. We've got a Jack Russell that grew up with the lab and he's been pretty despondent since she died, and not sure how much longer he's going to be around.
