6 mile walk this past Sunday. Wore the wrong shoes...they were a bit too big. The front of the toes on my left foot were banging into the inside front of the shoe. Among other things, this caused a bruise under my toenail on the big toe.
I had a routine nail clipping appointment set-up with the podiatrist yesterday anyway, so I waited until yesterday to have it looked at. When he was cutting the toenail on that big toe, blood squirted out onto his sleeve.
Look at your nail on the big toe. Go to the very top edge center of that nail, and imagine a vertical line drawn from there all the way down to the cuticle. The entire left side of that line is what he had to cut out. Most of that part was separated from the nail bed, but some wasn't. So now that part he cut out looks like raw meat, and the right side of the nail is normal.
He started cutting the damn thing out without telling me, but I was watching it. I have a very high pain tolerance, but it wasn't the pain that was getting to me. It was the fact that it was a nail. It didn't hurt until he got to the cuticle, when he said he was going to give me Novocaine. I told him no, and to just cut it. I've had probably 20 different Novocaine shots in my finger tips, and the Novocaine is usually worse than the procedure. Novocaine is brutal anywhere there are a lot of nerve endings.
I later asked him why he didn't warn me that he was going to cut it off, and he said...because there was no way I could have left it on there, and I probably would have ran out of the room if I had warning about what he was going to do.
I have a great pic of it, but I can't post it because it is gory. Opiates aren't touching the pain. Hopefully after a few days of soaking it will feel better.
The end.

Hip surgery is major and scares me! So does knee surgery. I hope you are doing great with your new hip!

(34,108 posts)to do my hip. It has been bad all my life and no doc would even talk about doing the surgery until all the tissue in the joint was torn and frayed and I was bone on bone. That was where I was 8 years ago, next year Medicare, YAY! The injections worked well a couple of times but have not for a while. I hate that I am excited to turn 65 and have surgery but it is what it is.

(3,867 posts)you will need therapy & assistance at home until you can at least bend down from the other side.
Get 2 grippers to pick stuff up, the 2nd one it to pick up the first one when you drop it.

(34,108 posts)I will bookmark this to refer to in 2019 when I am going to try to get it done as quickly possible. I appreciate it. I will need to hire a farm hand and that is almost impossible to find but I have time. 😁

(3,867 posts)feed the chickens & milk the goats, yes, I can (could) milk a goat.
I don't have chickens, I wish I did but I do have goats. Only 2, they are little breeds and both male. They were a gift, likely one of the best parts of my life those two old boys. I love them dearly.

(9,170 posts)I had gout in my right big toe. It's virtually impossible to curl your toe with gout. It's very stiff and the pain is exquisite. All of which meant I was trying to rise using only one leg, which is not easy to do, especially at my size.
