Hi everyone,
I'm going in for my first knee replacement on Monday - my right knee. I'm terrified - other knee surgeries (5 ACLs all on the left leg) haven't gone well (all with complications) so I'm a bit nervous about this one. I did convince the doctor to let me go that day (if the pain is under control) so I can start resting and PT at home. I could sure use all the good thoughts/prayers (for me and the medical team) you can muster and are willing to give.
Thank you
Paula

(29,722 posts)work on straightening that knee, you will always walk with a limp. Good luck on your surgery. I just got a new hip and I am in love with it!
Edited to add:
You need to consume about 80 grams of protein a day as healing pulls the protein from your body. I didn't get enough and I have lost about 70% of my muscle mass in my legs...ugh.
But, GOOD LUCK!

(4,671 posts)The first two weeks were tough because Im not able to take any pain meds (they make me nauseous) but it got better and better after that. I went back to running (my old-lady form of fast walking) in a couple of months. As others said, be sure to do the exercises and stretches. You can do this!

(23,369 posts)If you draw an arrow pointing at the knee you want replaced, that should help, too.
Best of luck!

(4,533 posts)In the sixties my college radio station was somehow carried in the electrical wires so we heard it without the shows beaming into the radios of the townsfolk. I guess there was concern of pitchforks and all if the townsfolk heard us. Locals would literally speed up as we crossed streets trying to flatten us I guess. Or at least get a laugh at our running for our lives. And I heard the Firesign theatre. I still think they were the funniest of all time anywhere ever. So your nomme de Guerre makes me very happy.

(34,138 posts)I had both knees replaced in 2012, two separate operation, and it went great. Both times I got approved to go to a rehab hospital for nine days because of other medical factors - which included 1) need for the other knee to be replaced and 2) recent knee replacement surgery.
It took my doctors intervention to get me approved, but I think it was worth it. In the rehab hospital I got more aggressive physical therapy twice a day and occupational therapy which has prepared me for future issues as I age.
My left knee was replaced May 23 and the right one on July 20, far closer together than the surgeon originally planned, but I was so far along by my first check up he went ahead and scheduled the second surgery.
The knee replacements hurt less than the two meniscus removals I had previously. I could walk sooner - the day after surgery - and climbed stairs the first day in PT, and two weeks later was walking without a cane or a walker.
Aside from that, do all the PT, rest when you are not doing that, eat healthy, drink lots of fluids, and get off the pain killers as soon as possible.
Good luck with your surgery!

(149,719 posts)I strongly recommend that you stay in the hospital for several days.....the pain will be harder to control at home. You need nurses taking care of you!
I've had both knees replaced, plus I was an RN, so I've been on both sides of the bed!
Take care and let us hear from you, when you're able!

See if anyone gets the reference.
Write in black magic marker on your tummy the words DO NOT CUT HERE!
Write in red magic marker on the good knee the international symbol for NO (you know...the circle with the line through it)

(34,661 posts)total replacement. Loving it,no more pain. It took two years of haggling with the Workers comp insurance company and then only after we dragged them into court. Judge was not happy to say the least with the Insurer and my Employer.
You will do just fine, just do your PT.
