(1,547 posts)It's only a fan if the generator begins to motor and the wind turbine takes in energy from the grid instead of feeding it.
This happens sometimes on ships .. when in multiple generators are on the bus .. and one generator has some kind of fault that prevent it from generating sufficient power.
Iam sure the wind mills have some controls to prevent it.. as there no way to say how /when the wind will blow

But aren't they also sort of accidental fans whenever the wind turns them? You're thinking of a fan that's powered to make the blades turn, but if it's just the wind turning them, they still turn, yes? Of course, there's no one there to be cooled, but a little wind is generated.
This is my non-engineer brain considering your comments.
