(63,208 posts)I've never liked Metallica, though.
If I had to name bands/musicians as favorites, I'd pick David Bowie (who likewise hasn't produced much music that I find interesting since about 1982). Ani DiFranco, Tom Waits, The Pixies, and so on.
Have at them, if you care to--I won't mind, I promise!

(33,236 posts)There are genres of music I don't care for,but those genres have accomplished musicians. There are bands that I don't like, but others do.
I didn't always have this open opinion, but arrived at it,in part thanks to DU and the lounge.

(24,841 posts)There were a few things that were good but overall 1992 was the beginning of the end.

(5,364 posts)Through the 80's they were great. "The black album" of 1990 was their last good album. Although we didn't realize it at the time, it began to show some elements of what was to come in the 90's.
When they cut their hair and slowed down their tempo and tried to reinvent themselves as alternative/grunge rockers, it was a major FAIL. Plodding boring music.
The latest 'Death Magnetic' is pretty good IMO. It's just that everything from 1990 til now sucked.

(12,008 posts)I don't listen to much heavy metal anymore, but I did as a kid. Master of Puppets is a heavy metal masterpiece, and their two albums before that were incredibly good examples of the genre. In the late 80's they started to go down hill, and then to just suck like suckers who were banned from sucking contests for sucking so much more than anyone else could suck that it would be unfair to have them compete.
I now think that most metal is incredibly juvenile music and very silly, but Metallica - for awhile - were an incredible example of the best within the style, and I think that's worth something. I mean, I don't like tejano music, but I'm sure there are better and worse examples within that as well.

(47,552 posts)...then their bass player died. Fourth album (lovingly, if derisively, nicknamed "box of bees" for its lack of bass) kind of okay. Everything after that was caca.

(25,586 posts)The entirety of Master of Puppets ("Damage, Inc.", anyone?) still kicks ass on a global scale and is probably the best metal album in the history of the genre, and the rest of their pre-Black Album catalog is pretty much untouchably excellent.
After that? Utter suckage.

(4,741 posts)Their album Master Of Puppets is in the Library of Congress for being culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.
They do suck now for sure, but Master Of Puppets was literally definitional.
Don't worry about how I found this
