Most of my transactions these days are by credit card, but I like to have some one dollar bills on hand for small tips, etc.
About every three months Ill cash a check at my bank, drawn on my account, to stock up on some ones.
Its never been a problem.
Today I took a check for $100 and asked for seventy-five ones ($75) and, wanting a few five dollar bills, I asked for five fives ($25).
75 + 25 = $100
The teller asked how I wanted the rest of the $100.
Huh?
She said seventy-five ones and five fives equaled only $80.
I had to explain to her five times, what I wanted, and that it did add up to $100.
She was reaching for a hand held calculator when she finally got it, and said
Oh yeah, right.
I laughed and said:
And you work in a bank? You know Im going to tell friends about this experience.
She gave me a nasty look, and I double checked the cash she gave me.

(25,861 posts)Especially as people who work as bank tellers usually get extremely good at counting money.
Years ago when I had a job that involved selling and working out of a cash drawer, I loved it when a new employee had worked as a bank teller, because invariably I only had to show them once how to cash out at the end of the shift. They understood immediately and never made change errors.

(44,973 posts)if you weren't so honest, you could have told her that you want the rest in fives as well. Or just ask for a whole 100 in fives.

(36,827 posts)Like you, I tip quite a bit in cash which I get from the bank. I ask for a good supply of $2 bills and use them at my favorite restaurant and espresso bar. When the servers count their tips at the end of the day, Im sure the notice and know where they are coming from. Since Ive started doing this all the servers know me by name and I get better service.

(17,444 posts)The kind you walk up to a window to pay when you are done.
I forget the exact numbers, but it went something like this:
I get $13 in cas. Hand clerk a $20 bill. Clerk gives me back something like $30 in change. Didn't pay attention until I was walking back to my car...then I'm just looking at the change he gave me which was still in my hand.
I went back and told him he gave me too much change. So he looks at my gas total, and I told him I gave him a twenty. He punches some numbers into a calculator and told me that the $30 in change was correct. So I'm trying to give the guy his money back, and it got ridiculous. I'm saying stuff like "Listen, forget your calculator, I got $13 in gas and gave you a twenty. Here is your $30 back. Now you give me $7 change".
He got glassy eyed and then agreed to only give me $7.
