(52,317 posts)my understanding is that they do not get paid for being inducted. in fact, i think they are expected to make further donations of clothing, instruments, lyric sheets, and other rock and roll memorabilia. it's possible that the hall of fame purchases at least some of these items, i don't know.

(52,317 posts)As part of a conversation on a Facebook community page, someone identifying himself as David Knopfler revealed Monday that he decided not take part in the ceremony because the Rock Hall had reneged on a promise to pay his travel expenses.
Knopfler, who was responding to a question posed by Cleveland.com reporter Michael Norman, went on to complain, "I can well understand that with only $5 mil a year in sponsorships and [$100,000] a table and no fees for the artist that paying my taxi to the airport must have given them heart murmurs like Squeers hearing Oliver Twist asking for more and frightened them into refusal otherwise one might get the wrong idea entirely about what they're all about."
When Norman revealed he was a member of the Cleveland media and was interested in talking further with him about the Rock Hall, David responded by saying, "I think I've already said too much," adding, "It's a great honour to be nominated all the rest is just the usual Faustian BS."

(32,057 posts)And it seemed as though the presentation of Dire Straits was lacking something. Most everyone knew why he wasn't there and why they didn't perform. It really did feel like a slap in the face.

(40,220 posts)I was under the believe that they still are not on speaking terms. I thought that was the reason Mark Knopfler didn't show up.

(5,914 posts)I highly doubt that this had anything to do with springing for cab fare.
I remember a few years ago when Peter Cetera refused to attend when Chicago was inducted, because the other members of the group wouldn't transpose their songs down two keys for him (something that is VERY difficult to do with horns). Basically, he wanted them to ditch the earlier horn-based Chicago stuff and play only the synthesizer-era Cetera-featured songs instead. Cetera is well-known to be an egotistical asshole, so it was no surprise that his bandmates just kind of shrugged their shoulders and said, "Fine. Be that way."
Bev Bevan sat out ELO's induction last year, saying that he had other commitments. But ELO fans are well familiar with the legal squabbles he has had with Jeff Lynne over the years over the use of the band name, royalties, etc.
