I am buying a new television because my old one died. This is for a living room with a desktop computer in it. I often sit at my desk (while on the computer), which is adjacent to the television, and pretty close to the TV.
I want a good wide viewing angle. I was told that the 43 inch set will have a slightly better wide viewing angle. On the other hand, it is a bigger set, and therefore will have a bigger picture when I am already sitting very close to the TV set when at my desk.
Thoughts?

(10,500 posts)I am not concerned about it feeling too big when I am at the couch. I am concerned that it may feel on top of me when I am at the computer desk. My desk is adjacent to the set, not too far away. My current set is a 27 inch CRT.
I do like the idea of the better wide viewing angle, if you really feel like it is slightly better. The desk is relatively close to the TV set. It is about 5 feet (off to the side) from where my eyes are to the center of the television, and the TV is about a foot and half back (at best). Maybe I can make it 2 1/2 to 3 feet back with an LCD. That makes a wide viewing angle advantageous, but it also makes it potentially problematic to get a big set and tempting to cut a few inches off.
If you have time to reply I would be interested in hearing your thoughts about this concern.

(67,108 posts)Here's one here, but maybe it's way too big. I bet you can get a smaller one, and far less cost. Then you can easily place it however/wherever you wish since it's on wheels. Anyway, that's what I would do if me, then you have the 43" TV with the wider viewing angle which to me would be a big plus. ... just my thoughts.

(10,500 posts)I don't think your plan would work, although in principle it is a good idea. The problem is that both the desk and the TV are up against the same wall and circumstances require them to positioned in that manner.

(10,500 posts)I am at my desk right now. My eyes are 5 feet away from the center of the TV screen. But I am 5 feet off to the side. I watch the TV, a 27 inch CRT, at a very wide viewing angle. At most, the TV is a foot and a half back from me in terms of forward distance. With a LED I can probably make that 3 feet.
If you have time to reply I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.

(21,946 posts)You won't regret it.
We have two TV's on our living room Mr. Shraby has a 65 cause he likes to watch sports up close an personal<G> and he had one put on the opposite wall which is a 55 so I can watch what I want from where I work on my computer. We watch different things totally, so we splurged and treated ourselves.
Only problem is we have to be careful if we want to turn the station of one so we don't turn the station on the other.

(10,127 posts)Some 40" may be bigger physically that a 43" w/ a slim edge.
If you can get bigger, get it. The price and size difference are negligible. If you get the 40, you'll get it home, it will be smaller than you'd thought in the store, and wish you'd gotten the larger screen.
Experience talking.
Good luck and enjoy regardless of the final choice.

(10,500 posts)And the TV I am thinking I will get is a Samsung LED.
It has something new called 4K UHD with HDR. I think he said HDR was the new part, and it is supposed to be good.

(10,500 posts)I sit at my desk a lot of the time while I watch the TV. The TV stand is adjacent to the computer desk. I often watch at a wide angle, but pretty close to the TV, if I am at the desk.
I am a little worried about feeling like the television is right on top of me and completely in my face. My current model is a 27" CRT flat screen, so I don't have that problem. I am concerned that it will be a problem at 43 inches, so I am wondering if it would be better to slightly minimize that potential effect by going with a 40 inch set.
If you have time to reply I would love to hear your thoughts about this concern.

(62,413 posts)my TV/ monitor is about 18" from my face.
I watch videos, DISH tv (MSNBC and sports) all the time. Even as we speak I have freespeecr TV (Stephanie Miller) on in the background.
I love it. But then I could never get close enough to the TV as a kid.
I am nearing 70, but my eyesight is pretty good. I use glasses to read, but not to watch our regular TV where I usually sit @ 6 feet away. It is now a 55".
When watching sports I love the big picture so I can see so much detail. Really if I could justify the money I would go up to a 55 inch 4K screen.
But this is an individual preference for sure.
If you buy at Costco you can bring electronics back for a month with no questions asked.
I have gone from a 27" to a 32" to the current 43" over 5 years. This one is HD (1080P) and that makes a world of difference also.

Sometimes I push by desk chair (which is on wheels) back away from the screen to get a better look at the TV, even while not moving to the couch. But the also usually involves moving close to the TV, width-wise.

(2,682 posts)I went through the same decision process. Small bedroom, would a 43" be overwhelming in a small space. What finally decided me was thinking of what I watch a lot and which size would do. Since I watch a lot of foreign films with subtitles, I decided I would be able to read them better on the larger set. So glad I did!!
