Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsTo save money, I buy only generic clothing.
Cheap stuff, and nothing with logos or saying on it.
Instead, I decorate my clothes myself with a black Sharpie.
For instance, instead of buying a baseball hat with some team logo or witty saying on it, I just bought a blank hat and wrote "Hat" on it. This saved me several dollars.

(50,949 posts)I'm trying to stop buying plastic (polyester) clothing because it all ends up in landfills and polluting the water. Its a whole different way of thinking about clothing. And linen is a pain in the ass. But I will persist.

(34,136 posts)Even in Florida when it is over 90 F and over 90% humidity, I still prefer my sweat soaked cotton clothes to artificial fibers.
Right now I am looking for dressier clothes - for me dressing up is usually wearing nice jeans and a tee shirt with a nice picture on the front rather than broken in jeans and plain tee shirts with pockets I wear to do chores on the farm. Mostly I am looking at thrift stores since the new stores is seriously expensive and badly made. Some of those are polyester or rayon but for $3-4 each, I will reuse them and donate back to the thrift store when I am tired of them.
I have to have dressier stuff since we're going on some cruises over the next year and a half. I've been told that Cunard Line will not approve of dressing down for dinner!

(34,136 posts)When I was growing up most of my clothes came from one - those my mother or I didn't make. And nearly all our books came from thrift stores.
We're looking forward to the cruises - first is in October to Cozumel. Next year we're taking one to the UK and back. That is going to be the trip of a lifetime!

(9,729 posts)It's easy to pick up name-brand and designer clothes for very little $$$. I like that, being a thrifty soul. I got my Brooks Brothers blue blazer for $1.00 a few years ago. It had never been worn.

(29,557 posts)the guy your size who died's family donated his clothes to. I once ran across a big pile of dress shirts in my size in perfect condition. Unfortunately they were monogrammed with three initials. Someone scored big on those.
My grandson, who graduates next Sunday, is going to attend Indiana University. I got an IU shirt for another reason, but now have one I can admit to. One member of DU knows the first reason, but I ain't saying.

(7,683 posts)buy the patterns on sale at Joann's. I only buy very generic T-shirts and underwear. Sometimes very chic women stop me and say, I love your look. -- That totally shocks me!

It's one way.
Others do it other ways.
