True Dough
(17,304 posts)but it has a great ensemble cast.
I think one of Hanks' most underappreciated films is The Road to Perdition.
underpants
(182,792 posts)It is the central preoccupation of my life.
Abe Vigoda as the chief of the Fanta loving natives.
Love that movie.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,368 posts)Yes
Do you want to marry him?
Yes.
You're married.
If only they could all be so simple.

(182,792 posts)Joe's boss: No no I didn't say that. If I'd said that I'd have been wrong.
A HERETIC I AM
(24,368 posts)A completely underrated movie

(12,585 posts)Always the master of comedic understatement, his character's innocence predated his role in "Forest Gump."

(15,381 posts)I will have Tom Hanks sign a DVD of that movie.
Also, I want Robert Downey Jr's autograph on a DVD of, "Weird Science." And I hope to ask him while he's signing it, "What have you been doing lately... movie-wise?"

gratuitous
(82,849 posts)"Nothing in Common," co-starring Jackie Gleason (no, really!) and Eva Marie Saint as Hanks' parents. Just a thoughtful, sweet story.

(46,094 posts)This one line captured the ennui of my own dysfunctional family.

(27,797 posts)With only 10 slots to fill, it's impossible to list ALL great Tom Hanks movies.

(27,797 posts)(I'm going to have to see that one)

(10,098 posts)I was going to comment on Road to Perdition, I had forgot about this one. I think one of his most powerful performances. I felt exhausted after that one, but in a good way. He really translated that character's depletion.

(24,259 posts)Polar Express, Toy Story, Big, Nothing In Common (paired with Jackie Gleason, wow) as well as Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail because I love the chemistry between him and Meg Ryan.
He's excellent in anything he does but I have young grandchildren plus I tend to watch lighter movies in general to de-stress and escape for a bit.
First Speaker
(4,858 posts)...maybe because I'm a huge fan of Max Allan Collins, who wrote the original story. Watch it if you've ever seen *The Untouchables*, because this one gives an accurate look at Frank Nitti and the Chicago Outfit...
Paladin
(28,255 posts)And a couple of his most recent movies---""Bridge Of Spies" and "The Post"---aren't getting the appreciation they deserve. Either of them beat the hell out of several of the flicks set forth for votes, here.

(22,977 posts)Jude Law and Paul Newman are also excellent in it.
Made me cry at the ending, too.
ProfessorGAC
(65,013 posts)You're 100% correct on that. The version in the Untouchables was laughably wrong (although it's good action movie) and, of course, he didn't die by being thrown off a roof by Eliot Ness.
He actually shot himself to avoid going back to prison about 12 years after the events in the Untouchables.
FakeNoose
(32,637 posts)Sully, Bridge of Spies, Charlie Wilson's War, Sleepless in Seattle (way better than Joe vs the Volcano), and he's awesome as the voice of Woody in all the Toy Story movies. And I know that The DaVinci Code was controversial, but I thought Hanks played it well anyway.
It's impossible to limit Tom Hanks' best movies to just 10, but nice effort RedDog1.

I never saw The Burbs, but I would pick the Green Mile as my third over Forest Gump

(9,170 posts)but my real favorite is "That Thing You Do."
red dog 1
(27,797 posts)and I've included it in the "addendum" at the top.
When I first saw it, I thought the actor playing Guy Patterson, the drummer who's father owned the appliance store, HAD to be Tom Hanks' son...he looks just like him
His name is Tom Everett Scott.
I also loved the fact that Steve Zahn was in it...I'm a huge fan of his.
rsdsharp
(9,170 posts)Hanks' wife, Rita Wilson, convinced him to pull the trigger and cast Scott as Guy.
red dog 1
(27,797 posts)Interesting!
rsdsharp
(9,170 posts)Here's Tom Everett Scott talking about it. Couldn't find the Hanks piece.
I loved the music in the movie. I thought Dance With Me was better than the title track.
I also loved the radio insider jokes. I worked in radio for 11 years. Hanks grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. One of the stations in that area is KYA. From 1965 to 1969 it had a disc jockey named Johnny Holliday who organized a station basketball team to play for charity events. The team name? the KYA-Oneders. Holliday is now the voice of the Maryland Terripans.
There really is a WJET in Erie. There was also a WCOL in Columbus, Ohio, but it was 500 watts, not 50,000. I don't know who the morning guy was in 1964, but K.O Bayley -- the biggest cootie White had every met -- had worked in the Bay area at various stations. He wasn't a cootie, though. His real name was Bob Elliot and he was an ex-marine with a very cool style on the air -- mostly at night. There really is a KMPC in LA, but it was an MOR station, not Top 40, and it was owned by Gene Autry.

(65,013 posts)While i really like a lot of the choices, there are those on your addendum list that i think are great. So, i got to a point where there were so many, i couldn't choose.
Interestingly, from the poll, Castaway would have been my last choice.

(12,153 posts)He's one of my favorite actors, so I like all of his movies.
When someone told me that in Turner and Hootch the dog died, I didn't watch the movie, but I've seen and liked the rest.
A few years ago in a TV interview, Tom Hanks said that when he read the script for Turner and Hootch he got a bad feeling about it. He said he told the director and others that the movie would bomb if they killed the dog, and he urged them not to. In the interview he said the movie would have been a lot better if they hadn't.

(27,797 posts)That was dumb, imo.

(6,112 posts)That movie was hilarious from start to finish and he was the perfect actor for that character.
