12:14 pm today

A new breed of sheep debuting at the New Zealand Agricultural Show in Christchurch is proving very popular with the crowds.

The Swiss Valais Blacknose, which are considered to be the "the cutest sheep in the world," have a black head and black knees, and a fluffy white fleece.

Wairarapa farmer Christine Reed, along with several business partners formed Valais Blacknose NZ and imported the breed as embryos from the UK about a year and a half ago.

Ms Reed said before the venture she had never heard of the breed but having bred dorper sheep for a decade, she googled Valais Blacknose sheep to find the cutest sheep in the world peeking back.

"What we were really astounded by, when we got them on the ground, was their personalities, they're just like dogs, they're actually not like a sheep at all ... so they are very very inquisitive, very friendly ... the lambs will come up to you in the the paddock and climb all over you," she said.

If I had acreage up in the foothills, there would be lots of wool and sheep cheese at the house.

She brought them back as embryos? What breed did she use to start her flock with? Those Dorpers she bred before?

If she did Dorper before, they are definitely a meat sheep. I add some Dorper to my Katahdins to give them weight.

But these would be simply for the lamb petting in the spring. Customers come out to pet the new sheep. It's getting pretty popular. Problem is they look like they need shearing. Shearing costs money. And the wool market is very bad here.
