(15,536 posts)and I like her advice. Years ago you didn't have all these cooking shows and gourmet recipes and hints from the internet or fancy kitchens. You just bought a turkey and put the damned thing in the oven! There is no big secret as to how to make the best turkey, though I always used a fresh turkey bought from an Amish farm when I was a young wife and mother doing the Thanksgiving family get together.

(1,321 posts)... time to anticipate seeing distant relatives, hearing NPR once again air that god-awful cranberry relish recipe from Susan Stamberg, and for NRaleighLiberal to once again post the sage advice link to just put the effing turkey in the oven!
Cheers, friend, may you and family have a calm and peaceful holiday weekend.

(7,528 posts)I have had amazing turkey though - both times when it was just the breast. It makes sense to cook the legs and wings separately.
My favorite idea was to roast the breast, and deep fry the wings and legs.

(51,590 posts)I ever made. I had just moved 3,000 miles away for free rent with my parents after graduating from art school and bought and made the whole dinner...Turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberries, potatoes, rolls and pie. It wasn't for them though, it was for my grandparents who lived 20 minutes away and weren't invited to my parents' dinner. I took it to my grandparents and they were so glad and that made me very thankful that I had the idea in the first place and went through with it. It turned out pretty well too since I always did love to cook (Easy Bake Oven Culinary School).
