I grew up in western PA and at Christmas time each year we'd hear ads for "Olde Frothingslosh" beer, a hoax by popular Pittsburgh radio personality Regis Cordic. This beer was supposedly brewed by Sir Reginald Frothingslosh at Upper Crudney-on-the-Thames.
In 1955, Pittsburgh Brewing Company began issuing special Christmas-season cans and bottles of Olde Frothingslosh filled with real beer. Since the Cordic ad read "The foam is on the bottom", the bottles and cans were packed upside down in the cases. (Supposedly the beer was so light that the foam was on the bottom) The humorous labels changed every year and became favorites of collectors.
The brewery released new editions of Olde Frothingsloshcontinuing until 1982 and then reviving the brand in 1998, and more recently in 2007.
Cordic advertised a wide variety of whimsical products on the show, including the Crudley white liner (an automobile that was only 18 inches wide, designed to drive on the white line that divided highways),
Mediocre cigarettes in a crush-proof package made of stainless steel,
a book of sports misinformation, so one could memorize the alleged facts and win bar bets using the book as proof.

(407 posts)My dad traveled a lot for work, and western PA was a frequent stop. Of course, he told us about Olde Frothingslosh. He even managed to bring home a few cans. He never opened them, of course.
In the mid 70's, we'd moved to NJ, and my dad decided to finish the basement as a party room. He built a bar, and we wallpapered the space around and behind it with beer labels. Of course, since his company did business with Anheuser-Busch, most of the labels were Budweiser. Some friends from PA managed to get some Olde Frothingslosh labels, and those were added so that everyone could see and ask about them.
