Make no mistake, its an excellent movie...for adults looking for a fun escape. My granddaughter was done with it in the first 20 minutes, when the most exciting thing to happen is a banker shuffling paperwork. Way too much mortgage and banking talk to capture little kids.
Once the animated sequences started far too late in the movie, granddaughter had practically given up, but she enjoyed the fantasy stuff. And it was brilliant. But then back to banking and mortgages, and granddaughter curled up in her chair and napped.
The other big gripe; its not really about Mary Poppins. Instead of Emily Blunt being the star, her MP lingered in the background of most scenes. The three kids carried all the weight while Mary just preened into any available mirror.
Go see it! Its a fun bit of nostalgia for grown ups. Visually stunning. But wait for the Blu Ray for the kids, or youll be wasting $12 Disney isnt allowing discount/early bird/matinee tickets.

(31,464 posts)Its worth seeing, but the kiddies will be bored. The big musical numbers are great (and I hate musicals), the old school 2D animation is perfect. I enjoyed it, but if my granddaughters reaction is any indication, Disney focused too much on making a nostalgia piece for us older folks, but not necessarily a joy ride for the kids.

(27,806 posts)Even in the late 1980s, kids had lost the attention span for that movie. I LOVED it in the 60s. We acted out the parts, sang that songs, had puzzles. I took some little kids to see it in the 80s and even then, they were bored by parts of it.

(102,236 posts)While i have nothing against a sequel, it still gives me pangs to see a MP movie without Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke--true treasures of entertainment IMO. Then to think that today's kids never really appreciated the original.... what a bummer.

I didn't really like the first one. I do like The Sound of Music and The Dick Van Dyke Show very much, tho... I did like a couple of the songs in the original Mary Poppins... Supercalifragilistic and the Chimney song. Can't say the movie was really good...

I love the original movie. It's one of my favorites. I never read any of the books, though.
