(17,454 posts)because I didn't know what the hell they were or how much to charge for them. So when someone held one up and asked how much, I just said "go ahead, take it".

(118,740 posts)Anyhow a few different neighbours jumped in the fun and we had lots of customers who pulled their cars over and came by. I gave a few hundred dollars I made that day to a charity I was involved with. Fun day. What got me was a woman who with her mother tried to steal some clothes. Who goes out grifting with their mom on a sunny Saturday? Had a young adult with developmental disabilities look at my costume jewelry. I promised her it was all fake and gave it all to her for next to nothing. I should do one next summer come to think of it. To get rid of books. And dvds. Anyone ever tried to get rid of things like books and dvds? I don't want money. If they are free can i depend on them all going over the course of a day? My street has about 20 people walking by in an hour. Cars are usually parked on the street so drives bys will never see a lawn sale. I don't want to monitor. Would it be better to give my dvds to the public library? Do young adult apartment dwellers even have DVD players anymore?

(34,136 posts)If the library does not want to add donated items to their collection, the friends of the library have shops or shelves where they can be sold and the proceeds go to the library funds.
Here, only the main library has an actual shop. The branch libraries have shelves of books for sale and it's sort of an honor system to pay at the desk. My sister is very involved in the Friends of the Library in her town and they make thousands a year that goes to the local library.
So donate the books and DVDs to your local library, but don't be offended if they don't end up in the collection. Just know that they will benefit the library one way or another.

(34,136 posts)Here, the Goodwill stores have a couple of bookstores and I know that they will pick up things. I'm not sure about their rules. My husband hauls off all our unwanted stuff to whichever charity he thinks can best use it.
