Not much! I was involved in a test study for Parkinson's Disease this week. They asked me if I'd consent to a lumbar puncture. You'd have to know me better to understand how curious I am about things. I was curious about exactly how painful it would be, so I said yes. The Lidocaine injection hurt a bit but the actual long needle drawing spinal fluid didn't feel bad at all.
So now you know that, if you ever need to have a lumbar puncture, you don't have to fear it. There was a $100 stipend that went along with it, so now I get to say that I sold my body.

(39,343 posts)I almost slept through my kidney biopsy because I was so physically drained. I think they numbed the area a bit, but I was so out of it, I didn't care much what they did. I've found that if I'm worrying about it, I must feel better.

(130,895 posts)because I'm thinking I may want to/need to have one, some time during the next year.
But I recall my daughter having one. She was young at the time, don't even recall the reason, but she complained about the pain. Maybe not done well or properly?

(6,113 posts)The type of needle that used to be used for this test was a rather wide one. The needles being used now are very thin. Also, I'm sure it also depends on who inserts the needle. The worst part is the Lidocaine injection to numb the pain!

(55,008 posts)I have sold myself for scientific experiments a couple of times too. It can save a LOT of money (make you a little!) and address medical issues you may have if you get things matched up right. I was in an allergy med study and got an ekg and a skin test plus a couple hundred bucks.
The good one was being in a large sleep apnea study - made something like $500 had two full night studies, they gave me a cpap machine (at LEAST another 5 or 6 hundred) and a follow-up medical exam. The drag was getting put in a placebo group and having to wait 5 months to get on real pressure but after living my whole life basically not sleeping a few more months wasn't that bad. That one basically saved my life. no insurance and no way to cover those kinds of costs at the time...

(6,113 posts)The kind that benefits both the study AND the patient are great. I've never had the opportunity to be in one of those.
