(13,895 posts)THAT is what scared the shit out of me.. The crew was working on the paved part so I had to ride on the grid..My training kicked in.. weight on the back tire. light grip on the bars, let 'em dance and DON'T LOOK DOWN, look way down the road.
When I was a kid I rode over the 59th street bridge in NYC (feeling groovy?) on a dirt bike.Yes it was a bit unnerving but that MAK bridge was something else...

(13,895 posts)I can understand being in the cold north.. In my travels thru the northern part of US and southern Canada, they only have a few months when the weather is in their favor for road work... Make hay while the sun shines and all that...

(34,376 posts)I remember back in the 1980's, a woman from Detroit driving a Yugo to visit her boyfriend in the UP went over the edge and it's haunted me ever since. She was almost at the midpoint of the bridge going a little too fast and they think a gust of wind caught her and she lost control. Dear God. I've been across it about 30 times and driven it about 10, but always in decent weather. Not today, though. Nope. No. Nuh uh.

(2,343 posts)I gotta get my ass to Michigan and drive that bridge!

(34,376 posts)Scarier, too--especially when you're riding on the grid lane, can see the Straits of Mackinac 155 feet beneath you and the deck at center span could be swaying as much as 35 feet (east or west) due to high winds. Yee haw!

(2,203 posts)Looking at those photos - do they keep it open in such conditions?

(34,376 posts)They have escorts for vehicles if it's too windy and drivers for folks not confident enough to drive themselves. In the winter, it's the only way to get between our two peninsulas because the Straits are all iced up so no ferries. Good times.

(7,488 posts)the live-cam for the bridge. Only one vehicle passed in a minute. I've crossed it about 40 times since 1961. Walked on bridge day 1986.

(15,536 posts)but it can be scary even in great summer weather. I try to just look forward and keep going without looking at what you're driving over.

(23,339 posts)... and yes, it seems there is always maintenance that closes some portion of the pavement, forcing you onto the metal grating. That's fun on a motorcycle.
The bridges that I hate are the very low bridges over long stretches of water. Tampa Bay has one, and Lake Ponchartrain. Those make me more nervous than the high span of the Mackinaw bridge.

(36,845 posts)The closure began around 1 p.m., after a multi-car accident was reported on the bridge.
Rick Weiss happened to be traveling across the bridge at the time. He managed to avoid the crash, but documented the hazardous driving conditions.
"I have to tell you, these guys on the Mackinac Bridge, the workers, they are awesome, they are out here in all kinds of weather making sure things go good," said Weiss told NBC 25.

(34,376 posts)I've had jackasses pass me like that--not on the bridge, thankfully--but I've seen that way too many times here in the Great Lakes State, lol. Thanks so much for posting!

(2,203 posts)can also be scary.
It's been too many years since I drove the Mackinac - but i think it is much longer than that bay bridge.
These are engineering marvels - amazed at what humans can imagine and build.
